The present invention relates to the use of natural protectants comprising a mastic extract and optionally a second component to prevent microbial growth and preserve a product. The invention also relates to the use of natural protectants comprising quinic acid or a salt thereof, ethyl lauroyl arginate or a salt thereof, and optionally a third component to prevent microbial growth and preserve a product.

Mastic-derived natural protectants

The present invention relates to the use of multifunctional protectants comprising (i) hydroxyacetophenone with (ii) at least one of natural 1,3-propanediol and a mastic extract to protect a formulation from biodegradation. The present invention also relates to the use of a protectant comprising (i) hydroxyacetophenone with (ii) at least one of vitamin B5, vitamin C, and vitamin E to protect a formulation from biodegradation.

Multifunctional natural protectant systems with hydroxyacetophenone

The present invention relates to the use of natural protectants comprising (i) a cetylpyridinium salt (such as cetylpyridinium chloride) or p-anisic acid or a salt thereof (such as sodium p-anisate) and (ii) piroctone olamine to prevent microbial growth in a product, such as a personal care product.

Protectants

The present invention provides novel antimicrobial compositions. In one embodiment, the antimicrobial composition comprises an antimicrobial effective amount of a mixture comprising (a) two or more fatty acids, each of which is natural or naturally derived, and (b) at least one of (i) a natural or naturally derived product, (ii) an alcoholic solvent, or (iii) an organic acid or a salt thereof. The present invention also provides a product comprising a preservative effective amount of the aforementioned mixture.

Natural antimicrobial compositions

The present invention provides an antimicrobial composition comprising an antimicrobial effective amount (such as a preservative, bactericidal, and/or fungicidal effective amount) of a mixture comprising at least two of: The present invention also provides a product (preferably a product other than a foodstuff, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic) comprising a preservative effective amount of cinnamaldehyde or a mixture of cinnamaldehyde and one or more alkanol-dialkyl hydantoins.

Antimicrobial compositions

The present invention provides a biocidal composition comprising a synergistic mixture of certain quaternary ammonium biocides and one or more ketone acids, aromatic carboxylic acids, salts thereof, or mixtures thereof.

Preservative blends containing quaternary ammonium compounds

Applicants have discovered that cyclic and acyclic ketone acids, such as dehydroacetic acid, and salts thereof as well as an aromatic carboxylic acid and salts thereof enhance the performance of iodine containing biocides as antimicrobial agents and preservatives. The present invention provides a composition comprising (a) an iodine containing biocide; and (b) (i) a ketone acid or salt thereof, (ii) an aromatic carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, or (iii) a mixture thereof. Preferably, the ketone acid is a cyclic ketone acid and the aromatic carboxylic acid is salicylic acid.

Preservative blends containing iodine containing compounds

The present invention is a method of stabilizing hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution, such as a circulating water slurry, comprising a peroxide, such as hydrogen peroxide. The aqueous solution may include organic matter. The method comprises adding an aldehyde donor, such as a methylolhydantoin, to the solution (or slurry). The inventors have discovered that aldehyde donors significantly reduce the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by catalase and other peroxide decomposing enzymes, which are often present in recycled paper. As a result, less hydrogen peroxide needs to be added to a solution to effectively bleach organic matter in the solution. Furthermore, aldehyde donors are safe to handle and cost effective. Another embodiment is a method of bleaching recycled papers in a circulating water slurry comprising organic matter. The method comprises adding hydrogen peroxide and an aldehyde donor to the slurry. Yet another embodiment is a method of inhibiting catalase and/or other peroxide decomposing enzymes in an aqueous solution, such as a circulating water slurry, comprising adding an aldehyde donor to the aqueous solution.

Aldehyde donors for stabilizing peroxides

A highly stable liquid formulation having broad spectrum preservative properties which constitutes an admixture of an alkanol-substituted DMH, an iodopropynyl compound, a stabilizer of a hydantoin, urea or derivative thereof, and a hydroxyl solvent. Preferably the constituents are dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, 3-iodo-2-propynyl-butyl carbamate, dimethylhydantoin, and a glycol solvent. The preservative preferably has a total formaldehyde content of 5% and less than 0.2% of free formaldehyde. The composition is prepared by successively admixing the alkanol-substituted dimethyl-hydantoin and the stabilizer, the hydroxyl solvent, and the iodopropynyl compound. Also described is a stabilized iodopropynyl compound preferably containing dimethylhydantoin as the stabilizer.

A method for disinfecting a substrate is provided. The substrate is contacted with a biocidal effective amount of a composition of (a) at least one quaternary ammonium carbonate, bicarbonate, or any combination thereof; (b) a solvent selected from the group consisting of water and propylene glycol; and (c) optionally, a surfactant.

Disinfecting use of quaternary ammonium carbonates

A highly stable liquid formulation having broad spectrum preservative properties which constitutes an admixture of a dialkanol-substituted DMH, an iodopropynyl compound, a stabilizer of a hydantoin, urea or derivative thereof, and a hydroxyl solvent. Preferably the constituents are dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, 3-iodo-2-propynylbutyl carbamate, dimethylhydantoin, and a glycol solvent. The preservative preferably has a total formaldehyde content of 5% and less than 0.2% of free formaldehyde. The composition is prepared by successively admixing the dialkanol-substituted dimethylhydantoin and the stabilizer, the hydroxyl solvent, and the iodopropynyl compound. Also described is a stabilized iodopropynyl compound preferably containing dimethylhydantoin as the stabilizer.

Stabilization of iodopropynl compounds

The present invention provides a highly stable formulation having broad spectrum preservative properties. The formulation is an admixture of dialkanol-substituted dimethyhydantoin, one or more isothiazolone compounds, a hydantoin stabilizer, and a hydroxyl solvent. The formulation is highly stable in pH ranges of about 4 to 8. Preferably the active components are dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, chloromethylisothiazolone and methylisothiazolone, and the stabilizer dimethylhydantoin. The formulation has a free formaldehyde content of less than 0.2% and is beneficial for preserving various aqueous compositions, including household and industrial products, and especially personal care products, which require a less acidic pH range than in which isothiazolone is stable in the presence of cationic salts.

The present invention relates to compositions containing a preservative system containing a two biocidal components, a first component comprising a formaldehyde donor compound, and the second component comprising one or more isothiazolone compounds, where the weight ratio of the first component to the second component ranges from about 1:1 to about 10,000:1.
