An optical storage medium having an optically-transparent flexible substrate, a reflective layer bonded to the substrate surface, and a print layer bonded to the reflective layer, where the print layer also includes a modified print layer region such as a lenticular region, a diffractive optical element, an embossed region, a holographic image, a magnetostrictive ferromagnetic material electronic article surveillance tag, or a radio-frequency surveillance tag. The layers are individually formed and laminated together, the laminated combination subsequently cut into a plurality of discs.

A method of assembling a paperboard package blank, a plastic hub and a substantially plastic recording medium includes the step of forming a sub-assembly of the package blank and the hub by mounting the hub on a first segment of a sheet from the rear thereof until the first segment of the sheet extends intermediate the back and intermediate flanges adjacent the hub central core and mounts the hub on the first segment of the sheet for movement therewith, with the hub central core front in front of the first segment of the sheet. Glue is then applied to the surface of the first segment of the sheet adjacent the hub back flange, and the first segment of the sheet and the hub are folded over an adjacent second segment of the sheet to form a panel and thereby trap the back flange within the panel intermediate the glued together first and second segments of the sheet. The recording medium is then mounted on the hub by inserting the hub central core front and the resilient detents on the hub from the rear through a central aperture of the recording medium.

Package for a recording medium and method of assembling same

An ecologically acceptable package for a recording medium includes a pair of easily separable paperboard and plastic components. The paperboard component defines a hollow box with a front face defining a large central aperture, and a front flap pivotal between a closed orientation wherein the front flap overlies the box front face to block access thereto and an open orientation wherein the front flap exposes the box front face to enable access thereto. The plastic component is thermoformed and defines a tray and optionally a locking mechanism. The tray includes a downwardly extending recess disposed at least partially within the front face central aperture for receipt of a recording medium, and an outwardly extending margin. The tray also includes a plurality of depressions about the recess for releasably securing the plastic component to the box front face without the use of glue. The optional locking mechanism includes an extension extending outwardly from the tray margin to a box edge, and a flipper connected to the extension by a living hinge and pivotable between a blocking orientation wherein the flipper blocks movement of the front flap between the open and closed orientations and an enabling orientation wherein the flipper enables such movement of the front flap.

Ecologically acceptable package for a recording medium

A slide tray package has, in combination, a slide tray for holding a recording medium (such as a compact disc or audio cassette) and a housing therefor. In the slide tray a receiving area is disposed between the ends and sides thereof for receiving the recording medium for horizontal movement therewith. The slide tray leading end is adapted for automated loading of the slide tray into the housing by being both horizontally tapered and vertically beveled to facilitate telescopic insertion of the slide tray leading end through a leading end of the housing and into a trailing end of the housing. The slide tray trailing end defines a vertically protruding lip configured and dimensioned as a stop for engaging a leading end of the housing to limit the telescopic insertion of the slide tray into the housing. In the housing, the leading end of each of the top and bottom housing faces is configured and dimensioned to enable direct grasping of the slide tray by the user, and the leading end of each of the housing sides is configured and dimensioned to frictionally engage the slide tray, thereby to inhibit accidental telescopic slippage of the slide tray out of the housing.

A storage package for an article and a booklet includes a pair of panels secured together and movable between a closed storage orientation, wherein the panels are substantially overlying with at least an article and a booklet supported by the article disposed intermediate the pair of panels, and an open use orientation, wherein the panels are not substantially overlying and the article and booklet are accessible. A fixed base formed of plastic defines a cavity with a bottom face mounted on one of the panels and an open top face. A floating holder formed of rigid plastic is disposed within the cavity intermediate the faces for receiving and maintaining thereon the article and booklet, the holder being movable between a plurality of positions variably spaced above the cavity bottom face. A spring secured to one of the base and holder biases the holder above the cavity bottom face, thereby to accommodate booklets of varying thickness.

Glueless storage package

An internally illuminated decorative object includes an electric light including a lamp socket and light bulb replaceably mounted in the lamp socket. The electric light is supported on a support member that has at least one through opening for the passage of the light bulb therethrough from its first to its second side. A flat translucent image-bearing member is mounted on the support member so as to be at least coextensive with the second side of the support member for illumination by the light bulb when the latter is lit as electric current is supplied to it. The support member has a central portion and two wings flanking the central portion and connected to the image-bearing member by respective lugs that pass through associated slots of the image-bearing member. The central portion of the support member includes a wall that extends along an arcuate course and two end walls situated at vertically spaced end regions of the arcuate wall as considered in a condition of use of the object and rigidly connected with the wall to maintain it in substantial conformity with the arcuate course. The wings are connected to the central portion of the support member by respective vertically extending hinge regions as considered in the use condition for pivoting about the hinge regions at least as the decorative object is being assembled.

An optionally glueless storage package for an article includes a plurality of panels, the plurality of panels being movable between an open orientation enabling access to the contents of the package and a collapsed orientation for storage purposes. A holder formed of plastic is disposed on one of the end panels for receiving and maintaining an article thereon. The holder has a far end thereof, remote from the other of the end panels when the plurality of panels is in the open orientation, and an upwardly projecting end wall thereon defining a central recess. An end cap formed of plastic has a near end directly pivotally secured to the holder far end, the end cap far end being a free end. The end cap has a portion thereof adapted to releasably engage the holder end wall when the plurality of panels is in the collapsed orientation and the end cap occupies the holder end wall recess such that the far end cap end maintains the plurality of panels in the collapsed orientation, thereby to preclude accidental movement of the plurality of panels out of the collapsed orientation. The end cap is permanently secured to the holder only at the end cap near end and is devoid of any living hinge or line of weakness intermediate the ends thereof.

An ecologically-acceptable and easy-to-open package formed exclusively of paperboard for the display and sale of a plurality of cylindrical articles (such as batteries) as a unit. The package includes a base for maintaining a plurality of cylindrical articles upright and parallel in a compact, horizontally-aligned configuration. The base includes a base top, a base bottom, and a base sidewall connecting the base top and the base bottom. A header extends upwardly from the base top. Where there are two such articles in the package, the base sidewall is trapezoidal; where there are four, hexagonal.

A storage package for compact discs and the like has a plurality of non-plastic panels including a pair of end panels and optionally at least one panel intermediate to and connecting the pair of end panels. The plurality of panels is movable between an open orientation enabling access to the contents of the package and a collapsed orientation for storage purposes, each of the panels having a pair of opposed lateral sidewalls, and the plurality of panels in the collapsed orientation defining at least one spine. A holder formed of plastic is disposed on one of the panels for receiving and maintaining a compact disc thereon. An end cap is disposed on one of the end panels or pivotally on the holder, the end cap being adapted to releasably engage the holder when the plurality of panels is in the collapsed orientation, thereby to preclude accidental movement of the plurality of panels out of the collapsed orientation.

In a storage package for a recording medium having a plurality of non-plastic panels (including a pair of end panels) and a holder formed of plastic disposed on one of the panels for receiving and maintaining a recording medium thereon, the improvement wherein (A) a given panel configured and dimensioned to removably receive printed matter therein, (B) the one panel additionally defines at least one lateral spine visible when the plurality of panels is in a collapsed orientation, and (C) the holder is releasably secured to the one panel and easily removable therefrom.

A double-walled paperboard jacket for a compact disc and the like includes a front panel, a back panel, a front inner liner panel, a back inner liner panel, and a pair of glue flaps. One of the front panel ends is contiguous and folded relative to one of the back panel ends, the front inner liner panel is contiguous to and folded relative to the other end of the back panel. Each of the glue flaps is contiguous to and folded relative to a respective side of the front panel, and each of the glue flaps is glued to the back panel. The front, back and front inner liner panels are of generally the same configuration and dimensions, and the back inner liner panel and the pair of glue flaps are cooperatively configured and dimensioned to define a composite back inner liner panel of generally the same configuration and dimensions as the other panels.
