A method for forming a coating on a substrate using an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge. The method comprises introducing an atomized liquid and/or solid coating-forming material into an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge and/or an ionized gas stream resulting therefrom, and exposing the substrate to the atomized coating-forming material. The application also described a method for polymerizing a polymer forming material, and further to apparatus for forming a coating on a substrate.

Barrier coatings

The invention is a composition made by mixing a multifunctional acrylate with an aminofunctional silane and an ethylenically unsaturated acid to form a reaction product, optionally dissolved in a solvent, characterized in that the multifunctional acrylate has a molecular weight of from about 100 to about 3000. The composition can be coated on a substrate, then optionally exposed to moisture and treated to initiate a free radical reaction. The invention can be applied to a variety of substrates used in packaging applications. The reaction mixture can further be cured by heating in the presence of moisture. The free radical reaction can be initiated by electron beam irradiation, ultraviolet radiation, gamma radiation, and/or heat and chemical free radical initiators.

Silicone/multifunctional acrylate barrier coatings

The invention is a laminate structure made by coating at least one side of a substrate with a laminating adhesive, bringing a coated side of said substrate into contact with a second substrate to form a multi-layer film, and treating said multi-layer film with a free radical initiator, wherein said laminating adhesive is the reaction product of a multifunctional acrylate, an aminofunctional silane, and an ethylenically unsaturated acid, optionally dissolved in a solvent, wherein the multifunctional acrylate has a molecular weight of from 100 to 3000.

The invention relates to a method of laminating two substrates by coating at least one side of a substrate with a laminating adhesive, bringing a coated side of said substrate into contact with a second substrate to form a three layer film, and treating said three layer film with a free radical initiator, wherein said laminating adhesive is formed by mixing an ethylenically unsaturated acid and a polyamine.

Reactive silicone/alkylenimine barrier laminating adhesives and applications thereof

A curable composition comprises a siloxane polymer, filler and a curing agent which is capable of effecting the cure when heated, wherein the curing agent comprises bis(2,4-difluorobenzoyl) peroxide or bis(2,6-difluorobenzoyl) peroxide. The composition is curable to a elastomeric condition by heat.

A curable composition which comprises (A) an organosilicon compound having at least one silicon-bonded alkoxy group per molecule and on average at least three hydroxyl and/or alkoxy groups bonded to silicon per molecule; (B) a catalyst component characterized in that the catalyst component is according to the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently represent a pentahapto ligand, R.sup.3 represents a fluoroaromatic ligand having a fluorine atom bonded in the ortho position relative to the M-ligand bond, R.sup.4 represents a group R.sup.3 or a monovalent alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, alkoxy alkoxy, halogen, aryl, halo substituted aryl, organosilicon or organosiloxane group and M represents Ti, Zr or Hf, which is curable by exposure by UV radiation; and optionally (C) an organo-silicon having two of silicon-bonded hydroxyl or alkoxy groups per molecule, wherein the organo-silicone is selected from the group consisting of organopolysiloxane and organosilicon-organic copolymer.
