A stereographic camera system and method of operating a stereographic camera system. A camera platform may include a first camera head including first left and right cameras separated by a first interocular distance, the first camera head providing first left and right video streams, and a second camera head aligned with the first camera head, the second camera head including second left and right cameras separated by a second interocular distance, the second camera head providing second left and right video streams. An output selector may select either the first left and right video streams or the second left and right video streams to output as a 3D video output. The first interocular distance may be settable over a first range, and the second interocular distance may be settable over a second range, at least a portion of the second range smaller than the first range.

The system may include a video camera, a video recorder that records image signals generated by the video camera on a video recording medium, and a metadata writer. An integrated broadcast/auxiliary camera system includes a broadcast camera and an auxiliary camera. The broadcast camera may capture a first image of a scene, wherein operational parameters of the broadcast camera including a broadcast focus distance, a broadcast focal length, a broadcast pan angle and a broadcast tilt angle are operator controlled. The auxiliary camera may capture a second image of the scene, the second image different from the first image. A controller may automatically control operational parameters of the auxiliary camera including an auxiliary focus distance, an auxiliary focal length, an auxiliary pan angle and an auxiliary tilt angle based on the operational parameters of the broadcast camera.

There is disclosed an integrated 2D/3D camera system which may include a 2D camera and a 3D camera affixed to the 2D camera. An inter-camera convergence angle between the 2D camera and the 3D camera may be preset. At least some imaging parameters of one of the 2D camera and the 3D camera may be preset. Imaging parameters of the other of the 2D camera and the 3D camera may be remotely controllable.

A stereographic camera system and method of operating a stereographic camera system are disclosed. The stereographic camera system may include a left camera and a right camera including respective lenses having a focal length and a focus distance, an interocular distance mechanism to set an intraocular distance between the left and right cameras, and a controller. The controller may receive inputs indicating the focal length and the focus distance of the lenses. The controller may control the intraocular distance mechanism, based on the focal length and focus distance of the lenses and one or both of a distance to a nearest foreground object and a distance to a furthest background object, to automatically set the interocular distance such that a maximum disparity of a stereographic image captured by the left and right cameras does not exceed a predetermined maximum disparity.

A consolidated 2D/3D camera system and method of operation. A consolidated 2D/3D camera system may include a first camera having a first lens and a second camera having a second lens. A 3D frame extractor may extract a first 3D image frame from an image captured by the first camera and extract a second 3D image frame from an image captured by the second camera to provide a stereo image pair. A 2D frame extractor may extract a 2D image frame, different from the first 3D image frame, from the image captured by the first camera.

A stabilized stereographic camera system may include an upright support having a longitudinal axis. A camera support coupled to one end of the upright support may mount first and second cameras, the first camera movable with respect to the second cameras. A ballast may be coupled to another end of the upright support. A balance mechanism may move a movable portion of the stereographic camera system relative to the upright support in response to movement of the first camera with respect to the second camera to maintain a constant weight distribution of the stereographic camera system.

The stereoscopic camera system may a left camera and a right camera and an obstruction detector to determine whether or not a field of view of one of the left camera and the right camera is at least partially obstructed. A controller may cause the camera system to automatically output only non-obstructed image data, in response to a determination by the obstruction detector that a field of view of one of the left camera and the right camera is at least partially obstructed.

A distance measuring device may be used to measure the distance to an extreme object. A controller may cause an interocular distance and a convergence angle between the left and right cameras to be set based on a maximum allowable disparity, the focal length of the lenses, and a convergence distance.

A second linear motion mechanism mounted to the base may be configured to adjust a second distance, normal to the line of sight, between the line of sight and a second rotation axis. A stereographic camera and a method of operating a stereographic camera are disclosed. The stereographic camera may include a left camera and a right camera having respective lenses and an interface for receiving a selection of a selected preset operating mode from a plurality of preset operating modes. A preset parameter memory may store a plurality of preset parameter sets, each of the plurality of preset parameter sets associated with a corresponding one of the plurality of preset operating modes, each of the plurality of preset parameters sets including an assumed minimum object distance and an assumed extreme object distance. An interocular distance mechanism may set an interocular distance between the left camera and the right camera based on, at least in part, the assumed minimum object distance and the assumed extreme object distance associated with the selected operating mode.

The stereoscopic camera system may include a left camera and a right camera having respective left and right lenses, a zoom mechanism to set a focal length of the left and right lenses, a focus mechanism to set a focus distance of the left and right lenses, and an IOD mechanism to set an interocular distance between the left and right cameras. A foreground distance sensor may sense, in near-real time, a distance to a closest foreground object. A controller may cause the IOD mechanism to set the interocular distance based on, in part, the focal length, the focus distance, and the distance to the closest foreground object.

There is disclosed a single seat-kill camera system and method. The single seat-kill camera may include a camera head, a support structure, and an elevator configured to move the camera head relative to the support structure to position the camera head in one of a down position and an up position. An obstruction detector mounted to the support structure may determine whether or not a field of view of the camera head is obstructed, at least in part, when the camera head is in the down position. A controller coupled to the elevator and the obstruction detector may automatically cause the elevator to position the camera head in the up position when the obstruction detector determines that the field of view of the camera head in the down position is obstructed.

Single seat-kill camera system

To compensate for changes in weight distribution of transportable, hand-held camera supports when one or both camera translate or pivot in a two-camera stereographic imaging system, the bottom of the elongated camera support attaches to a compensation mechanism. The mechanism has a balance plate movable laterally on a bottom housing. Ballast mounts below the bottom housing. A motor in the bottom housing moves the balance plate and the pole laterally in response to camera pivoting or lateral movement to maintain the center of gravity of the system centered along the longitudinal axis of the elongated support.
