A network interface for the secure transmission of data comprises a functionally encapsulated unit that encompasses the elements required to ensure a minimum functionality of the network interface, with access from the outside of said encapsulated unit being possible only via specific shared services. Reliable transmission between nodes of a communication network is ensured by encapsulating a network interface of at least one of the nodes, and by ensuring a minimal functionality of the network interface.

A communication system, network, interface, and port architecture are provided for transporting data across a network. The network can be arranged by connecting the ports in a daisy chain fashion to achieve a ring architecture or topology. The network forwards data according to a specific network protocol. A first port forwards frames having a preemptive acknowledge field before the payload. A second port receives these frames, stores them in a frame buffer and modifies the preemptive acknowledge field according to its available frame buffer capacity. Said first port controls its data flow according to the modified preemptive acknowledge field.

System and method for transferring data packets through a communication system

The communication system has a plurality of subscribers connected through respective interface circuits to a ring feeder for the common transmission of digital source data and control data. The bit groups are subdivided into component bit groups each forming a data channel. At least one date channel is provided for control data which are transmitted in data packets with a destination address. Furthermore, the interface circuit of each subscriber contains an address decoder. The communication system is simplified, and changes to the system are made easier in that at least one subscriber has a special address by means of which a received data packet is fed directly to an instruction decoder inside the interface circuit, which decodes to the bit base an instruction code contained in the data packet. The interface circuit, i.e., the subscriber reacts immediately to a corresponding instruction in the instruction code.

The numerical value is always set by one of the subscribers to a fixed initial value and incremented by each following subscriber along the ring feeder. A temporary allocation of the data channels for a data transmission between two subscribers takes place segmentally in the network, for optimal utilization of the data transmission capacity of the network only those network segments that are located between the applicable data source and the associated data sink are occupied for the particular data transmission.
