A document specification is examined to determine if it matches the device color characterization of a rendering device such as a printer. If it matches, then the document can be faithfully rendered by the device. Otherwise, the document specification must be transformed before rendering. A match can be detected by discovering a appropriate metadata within the document specification or within the document color characterization. Alternatively, a device signature can be used instead of a metadata.

Controlling dfe color management behavior in a distributed system

Colorant recipes for spot colors, or colors associated with vector graphic objects, are transformed to compensate for spatial variation in a rendering device. Inverted Jacobians of color production performance can be used to transform color deviations into colorant recipe changes. The colorant recipe changes are applied to original colorant recipes to provide the transformed colorant recipes. Jacobians can be determined by exercising a system model according to perturbations of the colorant recipes. Alternatively, test patches or strips based on perturbed original colorant recipes can be rendered and measured and the Jacobians can be based on such measurements. Alternatively, spatially dependent tone reproduction curves can be used to transform the colorant recipes associated with the vector graphic objects. Image processing systems can include a spatial variation information determiner, a spatial compensation information determiner and a colorant recipe transformer.

Spatially based transformation of spot colors

A method for representing out of gamut colors in a original printed image for an output device includes sampling the original printed image to identify colors for the original image, comparing the identified colors of the sampled original printed image with an output profile of an output device to identify out of gamut colors for the output device, and displaying a preview of the original printed image in which out of gamut colors for the output device are identified.

A method for remote proofing a digital press by performing the color rendering of a specific DFE and printer, including taking into account job and printer settings, while maintaining vector objects is described. In one exemplary embodiment, the method color renders a file to a PDF/X-1 format to enable a portable proof-ready file, independent of the target print system. The PDF/X-1a's output intent tag identifies the intended print condition within the file. The rendered PDF/X-1file can be sent to any device that supports the PDF/X standard and automatically convert colors from the output intent color space to the proofer color space for an accurate hard copy proof. This functionality automates and streamlines the proofing task of the end user because there is no need to find and load the correct ICC profile on the proofing system.
