An emission tomography carousel system and method for use with a stationary radiation detector in Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT) procedures is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment the carousel includes a patient platform having a seat and a tiltable, fiberglass composition back support, and includes two linear motion positioning tables and one rotary motion positioning table as part of a positionable mounting for moving the patient platform in three degrees of motion. A programmed computer controls the motion of the carousel about a predetermined locus of points. The method includes positioning the carousel in a 'home' position, placing a patient in the carousel and manually positioning the patient platform to a desired close position with respect to a stationary radiation detector. The position is then recorded in the memory of a control computer and the procedure is repeated to obtain the desired number of radii of the patient's organ of interest to the detector. If the desired locus of points that the patient's organ is to traverse is a known geometrical figure (the most common of which is an ellipse), then a computer is used to calculate the remaining points. After 'teaching' the computer the desired motion to be undertaken, the computer is activated and the computer automatically positions the patient in a large plurality of aspects with respect to the detector. However, in each aspect, the organ of interest is kept as close as possible to the center of the figure being circumscribed.

Emission tomography carousel system and method

An improved method, and apparatus for said method, for providing protection for an operator during the determination of radioactivity, and most especially during the assay of relative concentrations of two radioactive materials in a radioactive solution, are provided. The process for determining the relative concentrations, by comparing the total radiation emitted by a solution in a substantially unshielded vessel with the breakthrough radiation emitted by a shielded vessel of the solution, is improved by utilizing a special shielding container for the radioactive solution which can be used to provide the necessary shielding, for the breakthrough test, and can be removed, for measuring total radiation, without removing the solution from the radiation measuring means, thus avoiding direct human exposure to radiation, and which is also suitable for subsequent use as a protective container for the radioactive solution during medical diagnostic or other utilization following assay. The radioactive shielding container comprises a hollow body portion, a lower end closure for the body portion which is remotely and quickly detachable therefrom and an upper end closure, the lower surface of the lower end closure preferably having means to prevent rotating motion relative to the support surface.

Method and apparatus for assay and storage of radioactive solutions

A radiation eye shield adapted to protect the wearer from the hazards of direct beam and scattered radiation. In one embodiment, the entire eye shield is of a high density material and in another example of the invention, the shield comprises goggles having a pair of lead-glass lenses and lead impregnated vinyl shielding applied to the front and side surfaces of the goggles surrounding the lenses.

Sorption means are provided for sorbing radioactive gases, as in the exhalations of a living subject, especially for nuclear diagnostic test studies, comprising means for adsorbing the radioactive gas onto activated carbon, the carbon being contained in a plurality of independent, series-connected, chambers. The sorption means are especially adapted for the adsorption of radioactive inert gases such as xenon-133 (.sup.133 Xe). There can also be provided indicator means for indicating the flow-through of xenon comprising an indicator which changes color upon contact with xenon, such as dioxygenylhexafluoroantimoniate.
