The present invention relates to urea-terminated polyurethanes dispersants based on diols and polyether diols, aqueous dispersions of such polyurethanes, the manufacture of the urea terminated polyurethane dispersions and inks containing pigments and/or disperse dyes dispersed with these urea terminated polyurethane dispersants. The urea termination can have nonionic hydrophilic substituents.

Aqueous pigment dispersions based on polyurethane dispersants having components capable of interacting with cellulose are described. These components include a heterocycle pendent and or terminal to the polymer chain. The heterocycle is selected based on its Hansen solubility parameters.

Aqueous pigment dispersions having components in the dispersant capable of interacting with cellulose are described. These components include a heterocycle substituted to the oxygen atom of an acrylate ester. The heterocycle is selected based on its Hansen solubility parameters.

Disclosed are aqueous inkjet inks containing a polymeric ink additive as a binder. The binder contains a component capable of interacting with cellulose. Certain heterocycles having similar Hansen solubility parameters as cellulose were incorporated into the polymeric binders. Prints from these inks have better durability and optical properties than similar additives that do not have the components capable of interacting with cellulose.

The invention provides an ink for inkjet printing, comprising colorant and certain polyurethane ink additives which is derived from alkoxy aromatic diol derived from alkoxy aromatic diols which enhances fastness of the print towards highlighter and finger smudge without compromising jetting performance and storage stability of the ink. The inks may be jetted from both thermal and piezo ink jet systems.

The present disclosure provides a ink-jet ink, having a pH greater than 7, comprising a first aqueous vehicle, a colorant, more typically a carbon black pigment, and an amphoteric polymeric dispersant, wherein the amphoteric polymeric dispersant is a block copolymer comprising an A block and a B block, wherein the A block is a segment consisting essentially of an amine monomer; and the B block is a segment comprising an acidic monomer and at least one hydrophobic monomer; wherein the dispersant is neutralized, and the B block is free of an amine monomer. The disclosure further pertains to an ink set comprising this ink jet ink and at least a second ink which contains a reactive species with appropriate cationic agent, salt, or pH modifying agent capable of destabilizing the colorant containing dispersion of the first ink. Still further, the disclosure pertains to a method of printing wherein the first ink and second ink of the ink set are printed in an adjacent relationship, thereby minimizing penetration, feathering and/or bleed of the colorant and improving print quality.

Amphoteric dispersants and their use in inkjet inks

The disclosure provides an aqueous dispersion and ink jet inks comprising a colorant and an amphoteric polyurethane dispersant, wherein the amphoteric polyurethane dispersant comprises a reaction product of at least one basic amine urethane monomer, at least one acidic urethane monomer, and at least one urethane monomer comprising two or more isocyanates having improved bleed control, and optical density/chroma.

The present disclosure provides an aqueous dispersion comprising a solid particle and a polymeric dispersant, wherein the polymeric dispersant is a block copolymer comprising an A block and a B block, wherein the A block is a segment having a block size of about 5 to about 18 units, and comprises at least 50% by weight of a monomer having the following structure: CH&#x2550;CRC(O)O(CHRCHO)nR; wherein R and Rare H, or methyl; Ris alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms or phenyl; and n is about 1 about 20; and the B block is a segment comprising an ionic monomer and at least one hydrophobic monomer; and wherein the dispersant comprises a crosslinkable moiety; wherein the crosslinkable moiety is crosslinked with a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of epoxide, carbodiimide, oxazoline, isocyanate, and silane; and wherein the aqueous dispersion has a pH of at least about 8.0. These dispersions when used in aqueous ink jet inks provide images with the requisite optical density and chroma needed for emerging ink jet applications.

Crosslinking pigment dispersion on diblock polymeric dispersants

Aqueous ink jet ink comprising a crosslinking pigment dispersion based on diblock polymeric dispersants

The present disclosure provides method of ink jet printing onto a substrate comprising, in any workable order, the steps of: (a) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; (b) loading the printer with a substrate to be printed; (c) loading the printer with an aqueous ink jet ink comprising an ink vehicle and an aqueous dispersion, wherein the aqueous dispersion comprises a solid particle and a polymeric dispersant that has been crosslinked, wherein the polymeric dispersant is a block copolymer comprising an A block and a B block, wherein the A block is a segment having a block size of about 5 to about 18 units, and comprises at least 50% by weight of a monomer, having the following structure: CH&#x2550;CRC(O)O(CHRCHO)nR; wherein R and Rare H, or methyl; Ris alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms or phenyl; and n is about 1 about 20; and the B block is a segment comprising an ionic monomer and at least one hydrophobic monomer; and wherein the dispersant comprises a crosslinkable moiety; wherein the crosslinkable moiety is crosslinked with a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of epoxide, carbodiimide, oxazoline, isocyanate, and silane; and wherein the aqueous dispersion has a pH of at least about 8.0; and (d) printing onto the substrate using the aqueous ink jet ink, in response to the digital data signals to form a printed image on the substrate. This method of printing provides images with the requisite optical density and chroma needed for emerging ink jet applications.

Method of printing using ink jet inks comprising a crosslinking pigment dispersion based on diblock polymeric dispersants

AB block copolymer dispersants having an ink vehicle soluble block

The present disclosure provides a black ink-jet ink, having a pH greater than 7, comprising a first aqueous vehicle, a carbon black pigment, and an amphoteric polymeric dispersant, wherein the amphoteric polymeric dispersant is a block copolymer comprising an A block and a B block, wherein the A block is a segment consisting essentially of an amine monomer; and the B block is a segment comprising an acidic monomer and at least one hydrophobic monomer; wherein the dispersant is neutralized, and with the proviso that the acid number is greater that the amine number, and the B block does not contain an amine monomer. The disclosure further pertains to an ink set comprising this black ink and at least a second ink which contains a reactive species with appropriate cationic agent, salt, or pH capable of destabilizing the carbon black dispersion. Still further, the disclosure pertains to a method of printing wherein the black ink and second ink are printed in an adjacent relationship, thereby minimizing penetration, feathering and/or bleed of the black pigment and improving print quality.
