A cutting assembly including a grip. A tube assembly includes an outer tube, and an inner tube configured to be rotated by a motor of a drive assembly. The grip includes a nose portion defining an aperture from which the tube assembly extends distally, and an intermediate portion forming with the nose portion an open area ledge. The open area ledge may be sized to receive a connecting hub configured to be removably coupled to a housing of the drive assembly. A coupling member of the connecting hub may include a flange disposed within the open area ledge. A manually movable member is configured to rotate the outer tube about a longitudinal axis. The manually movable member may be positioned between the nose portion and the flange. The manually movable member may include a gripping surface positioned radially outwardly relative to sides of the nose portion.

A cutting assembly configured to be removably coupled to a drive assembly of a surgical instrument. An inner tube is coaxially and rotatably disposed within an outer tube and defines a lumen in communication with a cutting window. A projection is disposed within the lumen of the inner tube. The projection may include a distal first portion displaced radially inward relative to an interior surface of the inner tube, and a proximal second portion angled relative to the distal first portion. A distance between a proximal boundary of the cutting window and a nearest point on the projection may be less than a diameter of the lumen. An inner surface of the projection permits cutting action to continue until the material is sufficiently reduced to pass between a proximal boundary of the cutting window and the insert. The projection may be formed by an insert secured within the inner tube.

A device for collecting bone fragments includes a housing () and a filter element () disposed in the housing. The filter element has a first end (), a second end (), and a sidewall () that defines an inner peripheral () and outer peripheral () surface and includes a plurality of filter apertures (). The inner peripheral surface at least partially defines a collection chamber () for collection of a composition comprising bone fragments. The outer peripheral surface of the sidewall and the housing are spaced apart from one another to define an exterior radial volume (). The filter element also has a proximal portion () adjacent the second end () which defines at least one drain aperture (). The composition is acquired and collected in the collection chamber with the exterior radial volume providing a primary fluid communication path with a vacuum source and the at least one drain aperture providing a supplementary fluid communication path with the vacuum source.

Bone fragment collector and processor

A device for collecting and processing bone fragments comprises a housing and a filter element disposed in the housing. The filter element at least partially defines a collection chamber for the collection of a composition comprising bone fragments. An inlet cap is releasably coupled to either the housing or to the filter element and configured to receive the composition. The inlet cap includes a body, an inlet port extending from the body and configured to be coupled to a surgical tool, and a spout extending from the body opposite the inlet port. The spout includes an injection port extending into the collection chamber of the filter element. A outlet cap is releasably coupled to the housing and is configured to be coupled to a vacuum source.

A surgical instrument system including an endoscope having an elongated housing extending between a proximal instrument end and a distal instrument end. The surgical instrument system may further include an irrigation sleeve having a sleeve body extending between a proximal sleeve end and a distal sleeve end. The irrigation sleeve may further have a first lumen and a second lumen spaced out of fluid communication with the first lumen, the first lumen formed in the sleeve body for receiving at least a portion of the elongated housing of the endoscope with the distal instrument end arranged adjacent to the distal sleeve end. The second lumen may be formed in the sleeve body and extend between a lumen inlet adapted for fluid communication with an irrigation source and a lumen outlet arranged to direct irrigation fluid toward the distal instrument end.

The present disclosure provides a bioresorbable foam closure device for trans-nasally closing an opening in a base of a skull. The closure device comprises a phase-separated polymer. The device includes a stem portion having a proximal end and a distal end, and a head portion at the distal end of the stem portion. The closure device is deformed from a free shape to a constricted shape, inserted through a nasal cavity and into the opening, and released to at least partially revert back to the free shape such that the stem portion fills the opening and the head portion abuts cranium and dura to secure the closure device in position and seal the opening.

Skull base closure systems and methods

A cutting assembly configured to be removably coupled to a drive assembly of a surgical instrument. An inner tube is coaxially and rotatably disposed within an outer tube and defines a lumen in communication with a cutting window. A drive hub is coupled to a proximal end of the inner tube to define a suction path through the hub member and the inner tube. A hub member of the drive hub defines a first aperture, and further defines a reduced aperture. A diameter of the lumen of the inner tube is less than the inner diameter of the reduced aperture of the drive hub such that resected tissue moves from smaller to larger cross sectional portions of the suction path at an interface between the drive hub and the inner tube. The drive hub may include a lip disposed within the suction path with the inner tube abutting the lip.

The present disclosure provides a bioresorbable foam closure device for trans-nasally closing an opening in a base of a skull. The closure device comprises a phase-separated polymer having a porosity of greater than 80%. The device includes a stem portion having a proximal end and a distal end, and a head portion at the distal end of the stem portion. The closure device is deformed from a free shape to a constricted shape, inserted through a nasal cavity and into the opening, and released to at least partially revert back to the free shape such that the stem portion fills the opening and the head portion abuts cranium and dura to secure the closure device in position and seal the opening.

An irrigation sleeve, for use with a surgical system that comprises an irrigation source and a surgical tool having a tube to support a cutting accessory having a head, in turn comprises a body extending between proximal and distal ends. A first lumen formed in the body receives the tube. The head is adjacent the distal end. A second lumen formed in the body is spaced from the first lumen and comprises proximal and distal regions thereof. The proximal region of the second lumen extends from an inlet for fluid communication with the source, to a transition. The distal region of the second lumen is spaced out of fluid communication with the first lumen and extends from the transition to an outlet to direct fluid adjacent to the head.

Irrigation sleeves for use with surgical systems

A cutting assembly for a surgical instrument. A tube assembly includes an outer tube having an outer cutting window, and an inner tube coaxially disposed within and rotatable relative to the outer tube. The inner tube includes an inner cutting window such that the inner and outer cutting windows define a cutting window of the tube assembly. A portion of the inner tube distal a proximal boundary of the cutting window may define a distal region of the inner tube. A projection is within a lumen of the inner tube with at least a portion of the projection disposed within the distal region. The projection may be an insert. The projection occupies a volume of the distal region and/or reduces a cross-sectional area of the lumen distal to the proximal boundary. The projection reduces the size of material removed through the cutting window to reduce clogging of the tube assembly.

A cutting assembly for a surgical instrument. The cutting assembly comprises a tube assembly having an inner tube adapted to be rotated by a drive assembly, and an outer tube disposed over the inner tube. An aperture within each of the inner and outer tubes may define a cutting window adapted to be applied to a surgical site of a patient. A grip is coupled to the tube assembly and configured to be engaged by a hand of a user. A manually movable member for rotating the outer tube may be provided and rotated with an index finger or a thumb of the hand while the grip is engaged by a web of the hand. A web portion of the grip may be engaged by the web of the hand without being engaged by a palm of the hand. Methods of gripping a cutting assembly are also disclosed.
