Turbine oils of improved corrosion resistance comprise a synthetic ester base stock and additives comprising a combination of a dibasic carboxylic acid and a second component selected from alkyl or alkenyl succinic acid/anhydride ester or hemi-linear or branched ester and hydroxylated derivatives of such esters or hemi esters, and linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl substituted succinimide or amino substituted succinimide.

Corrosion inhibiting additive combination for turbine oils

The present invention resides in a turbo oil composition exhibiting enhanced antioxidancy and resistance to deposit formation, and to a method for achieving that result in turbo oils. The gas turbine lubricating oil of the present invention comprises a major proportion of synthetic polyol ester based base stock including diesters and polyol esters, preferably polyol ester based base stock and a minor proportion of an antioxidant/deposit control additive, specifically a sulfur-containing carboxylic acid (SCCA) derivative. Other conventional additives such as extreme pressure, pour point reduction, oxidative stability, anti-foaming, hydrolytic stability, improved viscosity index performance, anti-wear, and corrosion inhibitor additives and others may also be employed. The use of SCCA derivative produces a turbo oil exhibiting markedly superior oxidation stability and deposit control performance compared to that exhibited by turbo oil without the SCCA derivative.

A synthetic ester composition which exhibits thermal and oxidative stability, lower friction coefficient and lower wear, wherein the ester composition comprises the reaction product of: a linear or branched alcohol having the general formula R(OH).sub.n, wherein R is an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic group having from about 2 to 20 carbon atoms and n is at least 2; and at least one linear and/or branched acid which has a carbon number in the range between about C.sub.4 to C.sub.20, wherein the synthetic ester composition has a hydroxyl number of between about greater than 5 to 180, preferably between about greater than 5 to 100, and more preferably between about 10 to 80.

A low emissions, high oxidative stability crankcase lubricating oil formulation which is prepared from a base stock which comprises at least one synthetic ester selected from the group consisting of: polyol esters, synthetic esters having between 5-35% unconverted hydroxyl groups, based on the total amount of hydroxyl groups in the polyol, and synthetic esters combined with at least one additional functional group which is capable of increasing the polarity of the functionalized synthetic ester, wherein the base stock has an oxygen, nitrogen or halogen content of at least 15 wt. %, based on the total weight of the base stock; and a lubricant additive package.
