A method for making a compartmentalized sealant strip and barrier assemblyhas the steps of co-extruding a barrier stripof non-sealant elastomeric material with a plurality of projecting linear extending wallsand a sealant stripwherein the sealant stripis formed on one side of the barrier stripfilling the space between the plurality of projecting wallsto form a plurality of linearly extending rows of sealantacross the transverse width of the co-extrusion to form the compartmentalized sealant strip and barrier assembly. The step of co-extruding may further include the step of: forming the projecting wallson an inclined angle relative to a plane perpendicular to the width of the assembly. The step of co-extruding further has the step of forming the barrier stripwith lateral edgesandthat extend beyond the lateral outermost sealant stripson each side of the assembly, the lateral edgesbeing bonding surfaces to seal the sealant strip and barrier assemblyinto an uncured rubber layer when assembled into an unvulcanized tire

Method and apparatus for making a compartmentalized tire sealant strip

An air maintenance tire assembly is provided in which an elongate groove is located within a first sidewall of a tire. The groove forms an elongate channel within the first sidewall and an elongate groove access passage extends from the elongate channel to an access opening located at an outward surface of the first sidewall. An air pumping tube inserts through the groove access passage and is positioned within the groove channel. A cover strip attaches to the first sidewall to enclose the access opening of the groove access passage. The cover strip is positioned along the first sidewall at a higher distance from the bead region of the first sidewall than the groove channel to avoid contact with a wheel rim flange when the tire is mounted to a wheel rim.

The present invention relates to a pneumatic tire which contains a built-in zoned puncture sealant layer. The zoned puncture sealant layer is comprised of organoperoxide depolymerized butyl rubber zones comprised of a central primary zone and lateral zones joined together to form a unitary sealant layer. The sealant of the lateral zones of the sealant layer is of a higher storage modulus (G') than the sealant of the central zone.

A tire liner applier and method wherein a die and anvil shape the ends of the liner at a predetermined section which is transferred to a position adjacent the tire building drum where the section is stretched and the trailing end stitched against the drum. The leading end is clamped and applied to the drum where the next tire is built. The leading end and trailing end are tapered so that they slope away from the drum and provide a smooth transition where the ends contact the drum and outer layer of liner material. A butt splice may also be provided.

A method and apparatus of applying a tire tread to a tire carcass including the steps of conveying a tread on conveyor between two self-centering guides which are slidably mounted on a frame over the conveyor, the guides having parallel rows of rollers for engaging opposite edges of the treads; adhering one end of the tread to the tire carcass on a tire building drum; rotating the tire building drum to pull the tread over the tire carcass; and applying a predetermined uniform pressure against the opposite edges of the tire tread through the rollers to uniformly resist movement of the tread toward the tire building drum and thereby uniformly stretch the tread. The apparatus includes the use of a pneumatic piston cylinder which urges the rollers against the edges of the tread, applying uniform force perpendicular to the tread's axis regardless of the width or width variations of the tread.
