A low-profile, tri-filar, helix antenna having circular polarization (CP) includes a single feed, in the absence of an internal feed network. The antenna includes three metal, bent, quarter-wave monopoles that are physically positioned at 0, 120, and 240 degrees, respectively, on a top flat surface of the antenna. One of the monopoles is directly-fed, and the other two monopoles are parasitically coupled to the directly-fed monopole. Metal perturbations on one or both of the two parasitic monopoles control their coupling-phase to the directly-fed monopole. One of the parasitic monopoles couples at positive 120 degrees to the directly-fed monopole, and the other parasitic monopole couples at negative 120 degrees to the directly-fed monopole. Various perturbation options generate this CP phasing. One of the parasitic monopoles can have a capacitive shunt, and the other parasitic monopole can have a series inductance, or only one parasitic monopole can include a perturbation, either capacitive or inductive, depending on the sense of the CP that is desired. The three monopoles are supported by a dielectric substrate, or they are free-standing. A ground plane is provided directly under the three monopoles.

Low profile tri-filar, single feed, circularly polarized helical antenna

A low-profile, tri-filar, helix antenna with linear polarization or circular polarization (CP) includes a single feed without an internal feed network. The antenna includes three metal, bent, quarter-wave monopoles positioned at 0&deg;, 120&deg;, and 240&deg; on a top surface of the antenna. One of the monopoles is directly fed, and the other two are parasitically coupled to the fed monopole. Metal perturbations on the parasitic monopoles control their coupling phase to the fed monopole, and determine the antenna's polarization. Without metal perturbations, the parasitic monopoles are linear polarized and both monopoles are coupled to the fed monopole at &plusmn;120. With metal perturbations, the parasitic monopoles are CP polarized and coupled at &plus;120 degrees to the fed monopole. Various perturbations, capacitive and inductive shunts options are possible. The three monopoles are supported by a dielectric substrate, or they are freestanding.

Low profile tri-filar, single feed, helical antenna

An omni-directional antenna assembly is provided for wireless communication devices requiring multiple polarization characteristics. A loop antenna assembly for a communications device operating at a predetermined wavelength and having a transceiver circuit including a signal output and a ground plane, the antenna assembly including a conductive loop element and a conductive leg member coupled to the loop element proximate a loop perimeter, the leg member for supporting the loop element at a distance away from the ground plane of the communications device, the leg member also defining a ground point and a feed point for operatively coupling the loop element to the ground plane and the signal output, respectively, of the transceiver circuit.

Omni directional antenna with multiple polarizations

An antenna for wireless communication devices provides resonance over at least two frequency bands with a directional radiation pattern and reduced specific absorption rate (SAR). The antenna structure includes of a formed conducting plate resonator spaced from a larger substantially rectangular ground plane conductor. The antenna structure can be located near one end of ground plane conductor. Single feed and ground connections are provided on adjacent edges of the resonator. Two or more tuning capacitors cause the resonator to resonate over two or more frequency ranges. Tuning of the higher frequency band may be done without affecting the lower frequency band in the case of a dual band version. The sizes and shape of the resonator and ground plane are compatible with the dimensions of wireless communications devices such as cell phones. The resonator may be conveniently installed internally at the top rear of a wireless communications device, providing substantial front to back ratio in the antenna radiation pattern, reducing the specific absorption rate (SAR) for devices, such as cell phones positioned close to a user's head or body when in use.

Multi-band compact tunable directional antenna for wireless communication devices

A low specific absorption rate broadband antenna assembly for use with a wireless communication device. The antenna assembly includes a driven element and a parasitic element which are operatively connected to a radio frequency input/output port and a ground plane, respectively, and which are superposed above a predetermined region of a ground plane having a predetermined configuration. The driven and parasitic elements may take the form of traces or wires which are disposed away from each other by a distance related to the frequency of operation. The traces may be formed on one side of a suitable dielectric substrate such as a printed circuit board, while the wires may be self supporting and not requiring a dielectric substrate.

Low SAR broadband antenna assembly

An asymmetrical dipole antenna is disclosed consisting of a planar conductor, matching network, and resonator. The antenna is compact, may operate on one or more frequency bands, and is suitable for high volume production. The antenna exhibits simultaneous dual linear polarizations and a unidirectional pattern in at least one of its operating frequency ranges when configured for multiple-band operation. Applications for the antenna include wireless communication devices such as cellular telephones or data devices.

Compact dual frequency antenna with multiple polarization

An antenna assembly for a wireless communication device. The antenna assembly is mountable onto a printed wiring board (PWB) and consists of first and second conducting elements. The first conducting element is capacitively coupled via a matchable shunt and operatively connected to a ground plane of the PWB, while the second conducting element is operatively connected to the ground plane of the PWB at two locations. The first and second conducting elements are operatively connected to each other by a tunable bridge capacitor and together form two orthogonal magnetic dipole elements. The antenna assembly provides substantially circular hemispherical polarization over a wide range of amplitudes by virtue of the geometry and orientation of the two magnetic dipole elements which are fed with equal amplitude, but in-phase quadrature. The matchable shunt acts as an impedance transformer to yield a low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of less than two-to-one at the operating frequency. The antenna assembly includes a single feed point which permits RF energy to be distributed to both conducting elements without a power splitter or phase shifter(s).

Low profile tunable circularly polarized antenna

A system and method for rating the performance of competing antennas under various environmental conditions is herein disclosed. The present invention provides a method to statistically characterize antenna performance, relating actual operating conditions to the likelihood of completing a reliable wireless communication link within a desired confidence level. The invention provides a system and method to predict antenna performance based upon actual usage condition factors, such as power needed for transmitting, and radiation absorption by a user, relative to the angle of orientation between the antenna under test and a corresponding antenna on the opposite side of a wireless communication link.
