Aspects and embodiments described herein are directed toward a power interface device including a first power interface configured to couple to an electric utility and a second power interface configured to couple to a microgrid comprising one or more power sources and one or more loads, the one or more power sources including a generator. The power interface device also includes a power conversion circuit coupled to the first power interface and the second power interface and a controller coupled to the power conversion circuit. The controller is configured to allow interfacing between the electric utility operating at a first frequency and voltage and the microgrid operating at a second frequency and voltage by at least detecting an operating frequency of the generator and controlling a power flow between the electric utility and the microgrid based on the operating frequency of the generator.

Apparatus and method for providing a power interface

According to one aspect, embodiments of the invention provide a UPS system comprising an input, an output, a converter coupled to the input and configured to convert input power into DC power, a plurality of DC busses coupled to the converter and configured to receive the DC power from the converter, an inverter coupled to the plurality of DC busses and configured to convert the DC power from the plurality of DC busses into output AC power and provide the output AC power to the output, and a controller configured to operate the inverter, during a positive half-period of the line cycle, in a first mode of operation to provide a positive output voltage to the output, in a second mode of operation to provide a zero output voltage to the output, and a third mode of operation to provide a negative output voltage to the output.

An uninterruptible power supply includes an input to receive an input AC voltage from a power source, an input circuit coupled to the input and configured to provide power factor correction, and a controller coupled to the input circuit. The controller is configured to detect that a reactive current is generated by one or more loads coupled to the power source and the input, and based, at least in part, on the detected reactive current, adjust an operating characteristic of the input circuit.

Power supply control

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system () comprises a plurality of UPS units (UPS-1, UPS-2) connected in parallel. Each UPS unit comprises a power converter () for supplying a share (i load 1, i_load_2) of a total load current (i_tot). The total load is shared automatically between UPS units of power ratings, in a proportionate manner. A controllerof each converter is arranged to establish real-time feedback control of a current supplied by the power converter. An exchange current (i_exch) for each converter represents an imbalance between an output current of the converter in question and output currents of the parallel converters. Exchange current sensing circuits of the parallel-connected UPS units are connected together. The controller steers the exchange current of each converter toward a value (i_exc_c) that is a non-zero proportion of a current (i_mut) sensed within the converter. Said non-zero proportion is calculated such that the exchange current will be steered towards a positive value in the case of a converter with higher than average nominal power rating and toward a negative value in the case of a converter with lower than average power rating.

Methods and apparatus for controlling power converters in parallel connection

The present disclosure relates to a controller, a circuit and method for controlling a power converter using pulse width modulation (PWM). At least one logic block () of the controller is configured to remove a command () which is configured to control the other power semiconductor switch () in a half-bridge () so that the other power semiconductor switch () remains in a non-conductive state while an antiparallel diode () allows an electric current () to pass in one direction, called the diode's forward direction, while blocking current in the opposite direction. In case the diode () is conducting instead of the other power semiconductor switch during the duration of the state of the command, the switching command () for the latter is omitted. The controller is further configured to modify the dead time interval (Tdead) between switching from the power semiconductor switch () to another power semiconductor switch () or vice versa in order to avoid a discontinuity in the transfer function ().

Converter controller with half bridge adaptive dead time circuit and method

Methods and apparatus are provided that can be used to control a set of power switches operating as a power converter. The method comprises providing a set of power switches and at least one switch driver, each power switch being operable to connect and disconnect one of a set of input power line to an output power line, each switch driver setting the state(s) of an associated power switch or switches; generating by a controller a set of switch commands, each command indicating a desired state of a respective one of said power switches at a moment in time; sending each switch command from the controller to a driver module containing the switch driver associated with the respective power switch; receiving at each driver module switch commands for its associated power switch(es) and causing each switch driver to set the state(s) of the appropriate power switch(es) accordingly; wherein the step of sending said switch commands comprises multiplexing commands for at least a subset of said switches into a series of multi-bit command frames and transmitting said command frames on a serial communication channel, and wherein the step of receiving said switch commands comprises receiving said multi-bit command frames from said communication channel and extracting individual switch commands therefrom. The method and apparatus can be used for example in a UPS system.
