In at least one embodiment, a process to produce a poly alpha-olefin (PAO) includes introducing a first alpha-olefin to a first catalyst system comprising activator and a metallocene compound into a continuous stirred tank reactor or a continuous tubular reactor under first reactor conditions to form a first reactor effluent. The first alpha-olefin is introduced to the reactor at a flow rate of about 100 g/hr or more. The first reactor effluent includes at least 60 wt % of PAO dimer and 40 wt % or less of higher oligomers, where the higher oligomers are oligomers that have a degree of polymerization of 3 or more. The process includes introducing the first reactor effluent and a second alpha-olefin to a second catalyst composition including an acid catalyst in a second reactor to form a second reactor effluent comprising PAO trimer.

Processes to produce poly alpha-olefin trimer and apparatus therefor

The present disclosure provides processes and apparatus for producing poly alpha olefins. In at least one embodiment, a process to produce a poly alpha olefin includes introducing a first olefin monomer to a first catalyst and an activator in a first reactor to form a first reactor effluent comprising olefin dimers and olefin timers. The process includes heating the first reactor effluent to form an isomerized product and introducing the isomerized product to a filtration unit to form a filtration effluent. The process may include introducing the filtration effluent to a first distillation unit to form a first distillation effluent. The process may include introducing the first distillation effluent to a second distillation unit to form a second distillation effluent. The process includes introducing the first distillation effluent and/or the second distillation effluent to a second catalyst in a second reactor to form a second reactor effluent comprising the olefin timers.

Processes for producing poly alpha olefins and apparatuses therefor

The present disclosure generally relates to process to produce a poly alpha-olefin (PAO), comprising: a) introducing a first alpha-olefin to a first catalyst system comprising non-aromatic hydrocarbon soluble activator and a metallocene compound into a continuous stirred tank reactor or a continuous tubular reactor under first reactor conditions, wherein the first alpha-olefin is preferably introduced to the reactor at a flow rate of about 100 g/hr or more, to form a first reactor effluent comprising PAO (such as at least 60 wt % of PAO dimer and 40 wt % or less of higher oligomers, where the higher oligomers are oligomers that have a degree of polymerization of 3 or more); and b) introducing the first reactor effluent and a second alpha-olefin to a second catalyst composition comprising an acid catalyst, such as BF, in a second reactor to form a second reactor effluent comprising PAO trimer.

Dimer selective metallocene catalysts, non-aromatic hydrocarbon soluble activators, and processes to produce poly alpha-olefin oligmers therewith

The present disclosure generally relates to processes to produce alpha-olefin oligomers and poly alpha-olefins. In an embodiment, a process to produce a poly alpha-olefin (PAO) includes introducing a first alpha-olefin and a first catalyst system comprising a metallocene compound into a continuous stirred tank reactor or a continuous tubular reactor under first reactor conditions to form a first reactor effluent. The alpha-olefin is introduced to the reactor at a flow rate of about 100 g/hr or more. The first reactor effluent includes PAO dimer comprising at least 96 mol % of vinylidene and 4 mol % or less of trisubstituted vinylene and disubstituted vinylene, based on total moles of vinylidene, trisubstituted vinylene, and disubstituted vinylene. The method includes introducing the first reactor effluent, a second alpha-olefin and a second catalyst composition comprising an acid catalyst into a second reactor under second reactor conditions to form a second reactor effluent comprising PAO trimer.

This disclosure relates to cold cranking simulator viscosity ('CCSV') boosting base stocks that allow flexibility for engine oil formulations to meet both high and low temperature viscosity requirements while maximizing fuel efficiency. The CCSV-boosting base stocks can include C28-C60 hydrocarbon materials, linear esters, tertiary amides, dialkyl carbonates, aromatic alcohols, and aromatic ethers. A process for producing alpha-olefin dimers comprises contacting, at a temperature of 80&#xb0; C. or more, a feedstock comprising at least one C(linear) alpha-olefin with a catalyst system comprising activator and one or more catalyst compounds represented by the formula: where M is a Group 4 metal; n is 1, 2, or 3; Ris hydrogen or a Cto Calkyl; each of R, R, R, R, R, R, R, and Ris independently selected from hydrogen and Cto Calkyl; each X is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl radicals having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, hydrides, amides, alkoxides, sulfides, phosphides, halides, and a combination thereof, (two X's may form a part of a fused ring or a ring system), the contacting being conducted under conditions effective to oligomerize at least part of Calpha-olefin to produce an oligomerized product containing at least 30 wt % of the alpha-olefin dimer and at least 80 mol % of vinylidene unsaturation, where the conversion of the alpha olefin is at least 10 wt %, based upon the weight of the alpha olefin monomer entering the reactor and the weight of dimer produced.

Production of olefin dimers

Unsaturated polyalpha-olefin (uPAO) materials comprising a mixture of vinylidene olefins, 1,2-di-substituted vinylene olefins, and tri-substituted vinylene olefins. The unsaturated PAO material can be made from alpha-olefin monomer(s) in the presence of a metallocene-compound-based catalyst system. The unsaturated PAO material can be used as intermediate material for making PAO materials having functional groups.
