A coating composition and a method is used to coat metallic substrates for corrosion resistance. The coating composition includes acid, metal acetate, organosilane and water. The method includes steps of depositing the composition on an aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate and allowing the composition to dry to form a sol-gel coating on the substrate.

Corrosion resistant sol-gel coating and composition and process for making the same

In at least one aspect, the invention relates to an entirely or substantially chromium-free conversion coating composition and process for conversion coating metal surfaces that provides corrosion resistance. In at least another aspect, the present invention relates to an article having a metal surface that is at least partially coated with an entirely or substantially chromium-free conversion coating that provides corrosion resistance. In certain embodiments, the conversion coating composition comprises water and (A) dissolved fluorometallate anions selected from the group consisting of TiF , ZrF , HfF , SiF , AlF , GeF , SnF , BF , and mixtures thereof and (B) a water-soluble polymer which is a Mannich adduct of poly(4-vinyl phenol) and N-methyl ethanolamine. In other embodiments, the composition also comprises (C) a water-soluble polymer which is a Mannich adduct of poly(4-vinyl phenol) and N-methyl glucamine.

Non-chromate conversion coating compositions, process for conversion coating metals, and articles so coated

A visible colored chromium- and phosphorus-free conversion coating can be formed on a metal surface by contacting it with an aqueous liquid composition that comprises an alizarine dye and a product of chemical interaction between a first initial reagent component selected from the group consisting of fluoroacids of the elements titanium, zirconium, hafnium, boron, aluminum, silicon, germanium, and tin; and a second initial reagent component selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, boron, aluminum, silicon, germanium, and tin and all of oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates of all of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, boron, aluminum, silicon, germanium, and tin.
