There is disclosed a coating composition for the preparation of a CF sheet (i.e. a receiving sheet) of a carbonless paper copying system comprising a CF sheet and a CB sheet (i.e. a donating sheet). The coating composition comprises a color developer and an extender, wherein the extender comprises a particulate inorganic material which has been modified by treatment with a treating agent which has (i) a non-polar hydrophobic portion comprising at least one hydrocarbon group having a chain length of from 8 to 30 carbon atoms and (ii) a polar portion which is capable of binding with sites on the surface of the pigment particles.

There is disclosed a method for improving the rheological properties of a clay mineral which, when dispersed with water, either releases into solution or retains on its surface multivalent cations, which method includes the step of treating the clay mineral in aqueous suspension with an aluminosiliceous material having a cation exchange capacity of at least 50 meq/100 g, said aluminosiliceous material being employed in an amount sufficient to react with a significant proportion of the exchangeable cations in the clay mineral. Also disclosed is an aqueous suspension of a clay mineral, a method for preparing a paper coating composition and a method for improving the rheological properties of a clay mineral.

A trailing blade paper coating apparatus is disclosed which comprises means providing a resilient curved surface for supporting a moving web of cellulosic material, an applicator for a paper coating composition and a trailing blade which in use is biased towards and in contact with the moving web of cellulosic material, and which further includes a flexible blade mounted so that, in operation of the trailing blade paper coating apparatus, the flexible blade is in contact with a web of cellulosic material to be coated at a location which is upstream relative to the trailing blade and downstream relative to the applicator for the coating composition.
