An apparatus and method for compensating for variation of the image placement for each color station in an intermediate transfer drum system. A sensor detects the image placed by the previous station and triggers the imaging on the drum such that it properly registered to the previous image. However, the variation of the drum's radius results in runout which creates an error in the image placement, since the surface drum travel will be larger or smaller than expected. The method to correct for a lead edge offset for radial runout involves dividing the drum into regions and calculating an offset center of each region. As the drum transitions from region to region the offset value is updated to determine when to start imaging for proper placement on the sheet. The offset can be derived from the image runout to find the distance traveled from the transfer point or can be measured directly from color-to-color registration variation.

Access is provided to a variable data printing app and a code detection app on a computer server. The variable data printing app is adapted to add machine-readable code to printable items and create a decoder app capable of decoding the machine-readable code. The code detection app is adapted to receive user identification information and transmit the user identification information to designer devices. The printable items are printed as printed products. The designer devices validate a user device based on the validity of the user identification information. In response, the variable data printing app is adapted to transmit the decoder app to validated user devices. The code detection app, operating on the user device, is adapted to decode the machine-readable code in user-acquired images into an optional secure link with the designer devices.

A method of forming a chemical delivery device with an active chemical includes generating halftoned image data using a stochastic halftone screen and with reference to a concentration parameter for the active chemical. The method also includes ejecting a chemical carrier including the active chemical into a portion of a plurality of cavities formed in the chemical delivery device based on the halftoned image data to produce the chemical delivery device with a concentration of the active chemical corresponding to the concentration parameter.

Methods, Apparatus, Devices and Systems herein load a firing distance into a distance counter of a printing device. The firing distance is the distance from the current position of a printhead of the printing device to a marking location on a substrate and the distance is calculated based on an angular encoder operatively associated with a roller used to transport a marking media to the printhead for marking. These devices and methods count the firing distance in angular distance increments as a function of the encoder angular position to correct for encoder roller runout using the distance counter, based on relative movement of the substrate and printhead. When the distance counter reaches the last discrete distance increment corrected for encoder roller runout of the firing distance, these devices and methods load the fractional remaining distance of the firing distance into a time counter of the printing device. Then, the fractional remaining distance is counted using velocity-based distance increments at regular time intervals using the time counter. When the time counter reaches the last velocity-based calculated distance increment of the fractional remaining distance, the marking material is transferred from the printhead to the substrate.

Method, apparatus, device and system for correction of encoder runout

A printing system includes a pair of encoders to compensate for encoder noise in the velocity of a media transport as the transport moves past a plurality of printheads. One encoder monitors a roller that positioned at a location of low thermal stress and the signal generated by this encoder is used by a controller to maintain a constant velocity for the media transport. The second encoder monitors a roller used to drive the media transport and is positioned close to the print zone opposite the printheads. The signal from the second encoder is used to identify a corrected distance between each tic in the tics generated by the second encoder and the corrected distance is used to count a firing distance for generation of a dot clock signal to activate ejectors in a printhead when a substrate has traveled the firing distance.

The dot clock signal generators are connected in a chain that corresponds to the process direction of the color stations in the printer. Each dot clock signal generator is configured to count dot clock signals of a preceding dot clock signal generator in the chain or a reference clock generator to determine when the dot clock signal generator turns on and to count encoder signals corresponding to movement of a substrate through the printer to determine when to generate dot clock signals for a color station.

A method of forming a three-dimensional printed object having a printed surface image includes ejecting drops of a build material to form the three-dimensional printed object with a plurality of layers of build material and at least one layer of a transparent material. The method operates ejectors to form a printed image with a marking agent so the printed image can be viewed through the at least one transparent layer. A leveler is applied to a surface of the layer of transparent material but not to the printed image.

A three-dimensional object printer ejects drops of a build material from a plurality of ejectors in a first printhead to form an object on a first region of a member and ejects drops of a support material from a plurality of ejectors in a second printhead to support the object on the first region of the member. The second printhead ejects drops of the support material onto a second region of the member that is separate from the first region to form a substrate layer. The first printhead ejects drops of the build material onto the substrate layer to form a printed test pattern. An image sensor generates image data of the printed test pattern to identify an inoperable ejector in the first printhead.

A method of forming a three-dimensional printed object having a printed surface image includes ejecting drops of a build material to form the three-dimensional printed object from a plurality of layers of build material on a support member and applying a leveler to a surface of each layer of the build material. The method further includes ejecting drops of a marking agent on a surface of the three-dimensional printed object to form a printed image, ejecting drops of a transparent material over the printed image to form a layer of transparent material over the printed image, and applying the leveler to a surface of the layer of transparent material but not to the printed image.

A method of operating a printer analyzes a printed test pattern in a low-contrast printing configuration. The method includes forming a printed test pattern having a plurality of rows of negative marks on an image receiving member, each negative mark in the plurality of rows of negative marks being surrounded by ink from at least a portion of the plurality of inkjets.
