Novel strains ofare disclosed. Several novel mutated strains of Pseudomonads are engineered by repetitive culturing of a parent strain under stressed conditions. Various enriched populations are screened and ranked based on relative performance indices including viable cell yield during growth, efficacy in suppression of dry rot disease, cell growth recovery after dry storage and resistance to switchgrass hydrolysate.

Desiccation resistant pseudomonad strains and treatment of agricultural maladies therewith

Several mutated strains ofare generated by repetitive culturing of the parent strain on two types of concentrated hydrolyzates and with ethanol-challenged xylose-fed continuous culture. Isolates collected from various enriched populations are screened and ranked based on relative xylose uptake rate and ethanol yield. Ranking on hydrolyzates with and without nutritional supplementation is used to identify those isolates with best performance across diverse conditions.

Yeast strains

Disclosed is a method to incorporate xylose transport related genes into a yeast strain for lignocelluloses to ethanol production. More specifically, the invention relates to novelstrains NRRL Y-50463 and yeast strains having novel xylose transporter genes, the genes deposited as GenBank JF343555, GenBank JF343556, GenBank JF343557, GenBank JF343558, and GenBank JF343559. The yeast strains having said genes are deposited as Y-50465, Y-50466, Y-50746, Y-50747, Y-50748, and Y-50749.

Yeast strains and method for lignocellulose to ethanol production

Bacterial compositions effective for inhibiting fungal diseases of potatoes and/or potato sprouting are produced by co-culture of two or more of(NRRL B-21133),biovar (NRRL B-21053),(NRRL B-21102) and(NRRL B-21050). Compositions produced by co-culture of these bacteria together in the same culture medium are significantly more effective for inhibiting fungi-induced diseases of potatoes and/or inhibiting sprouting of potatoes, than blends or mixtures of the same bacteria cultured separately.

Biocontrol of storage maladies of potatoes by bacterial antagonists produced in co-culture

Six bacterial strains:strain 03WN13,strain 03WN23,strain 03WN25,strain 10IL21,strain 10IL31, andstrain 13IL01, are superior antagonists ofPethybr., the causative agent of pink rot on potatoes. These bacterial strains are effective for suppression and control of pink rot on potatoes.

Use of novel strains for biological control of pink rot infections in potato tubers

Three choline utilizing strains of microorganisms isolated from the anthers of wheat,strain AS 55.2,species strain OH 221.3, andspecies strain AS 64.4, are superior antagonists of. These microorganisms are effective for suppression and control of FHB in cereals, particularly in wheat and barley.

Choline-utilizing microbial strains for biologically controlling fusarium head blight

Sprouting in stored potatoes is suppressed with sprout control agents of bacterial origin. These agents are typically applied to the potato surfaces as whole culture broths and they prevent softening and necrosis of the tuber. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, selected isolates also have the secondary effect of Fusarium dry rot control.

Biological control of sprouting in potatoes

Bacteria which will suppress fungus-induced potato disease under storage conditions have been screened and selected from soil samples. A method for isolating these antagonists, their use in controlling potato disease, and specific isolates which are inhibitory to potato dry rot disease under post-harvest conditions constitute the essence of the invention. The subject biocontrol agents are considered to be economically-feasible alternatives to chemical agents currently in use for this purpose.

A method is disclosed for producing 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) from glycerol by culturing the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae having the identifying characteristics of NRRL B-4011, under aerobic conditions, in an aqueous nutrient medium containing glycerol and a compound that causes 3-HPA to be accumulated by blocking the conversion of 3-HPA to trimethylene glycol. This process is particularly useful for the production, from renewable resources, of acrylic acid, an industrially important plymerizable monomer used in the manufacture of synthetic polymers and plastics and which is presently derived from fossil fuel sources.

Production of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde from glycerol by Klebsiella

Immobilized enzyme-polysaccharide graft copolymer products are prepared by hydrolyzing a polysaccharide graft copolymer and then contacting the hydrolyzed copolymer with an enzyme to immobilize the enzyme on the copolymer. The copolymer-enzyme products retain large quantities of active enzyme, and activity of the enzyme is retained over long periods of use. In the case of glucoamylase immobilized in accordance with the method of the invention, improved yield of glucose from starch is obtained.
