Polymer compounds which have recurring ##STR1## units are disclosed. These polymers provide active methylene groups which serve as points of attachment for organic groups--particularly azo functionality-containing groups. These azo links can be cleaved by bacteria in the mammalian lower bowel, thereby releasing the corresponding amino groups. This mechanism can effect programmed delivery of pharmaceutically desirable species to the lower bowel.

Polymeric compounds which have recurring ##STR1## units, wherein X is N or O, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are hydrogens or lower alkyls and R.sub.4 is ##STR2## and aromatic amine or an aromatic hydrazine which provides X as N. These polymers provide active methylene groups which serve as points of attachment for organic groups-particularly azo functionality-containing groups. Polymeric active methylene compounds

Soluble polymeric colorants composed of free amine groups and chromophoric groups covalently bonded to an organic backbone are disclosed. The number of free amine groups is not less than one-half the number of chromophoric groups. The colorants are characterized by being free of sulfonate, phosphonate and carboxylate groups. The preparation and use of these colorants is also disclosed.

Free amine-containing polymeric dyes

A process for preparing a family of orange polymeric colorants having a plurality of units of the chromophore ##STR1## is disclosed. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogens, lower alkyls or alkoxies, nitros, halos or sulfonates, R.sub.3 is benzyl, benzyl sulfonate, lower alkyl or alkyl sulfonate, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or lower alkyl. With the disclosed process, the chromophore units, less the R.sub.3 substituent, are bonded to an organic polymer backbone. The R.sub.3 substituent is added thereafter in a separate second step.

Process for preparing orange polymeric colorants

Dihydrochalcones of the formula ##STR1## are disclosed wherein M.sup.+ is a cation, X is H or OH, and R is a lower alkyl. These materials are useful as sweeteners for edibles. They may be prepared by electrophilic addition of the 3-sulfo-5,6-dihydroxyhexyl group to the corresponding flavanones, using epoxysultone, and thereafter converting to the dihydrochalcone.

Polymeric colorants comprising a hydrocarbon backbone and attached directly thereto through amine linkages, at least one water-solubilizing group and at least one optically chromophoric group are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the backbone is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, the chromophore is an anthraquinone chromophore and the solubilizing group is a sulfonate or sulfamate residue.

Water-soluble amine-linked polymeric colorants

A new compound, denominated epoxysultone, having the structure ##STR1## is disclosed. The compound is an electrophilic addition agent of broad application which finds especial use in the preparation of new sweetener compounds. An intermediate to epoxysultone is also disclosed.

Phenolic polymers having 3 to 1000 repeating units of the general structural formula ##STR1## wherein X and X.sup.1 independently are hydrogens or methyls, R is a lower alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl of from 6 to 14 carbon atoms, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, lower alkyls of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, aralkyls of from 8 to 14 carbons, or alkoxys or aralkyloxys of from 1 to about 14 carbons, are prepared in one step by contacting an R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 -containing phenol having two hydrogens ortho to the hydroxyl group with a low purity diolefinic hydrocarbon under ortho-alkylation conditions in the presence of an effective amount of an ortho-alkylation catalyst. These materials find use as antioxidants, especially for edibles, where their polymeric nature offers advantages.
