The invention relates to a method of making an acrylic graft polymer, especially a urethanized acrylic graft polymer. The method of the invention requires an ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture (a) comprising a monomer (ai) of a particular structure having at least one cyclic carbonate group and the polymerization of the monomer mixture (a) under free radical polymerization conditions to make an acrylic backbone polymer (b) comprising one or more cyclic carbonate functional groups (bi). At least one grafting moiety (c) is then provided, said grafting moiety (c) comprising at least one amine group (ci) selected from primary amines, secondary amines, and mixtures of both primary and secondary amines. The grafting moiety (c) is then grafted onto acrylic backbone polymer (b) via reaction between the at least one amine group (ci) and cyclic carbonate functional groups (bi) so as to make an urethanized acrylic graft polymer.

Method for selective graft polymerization

The &#x3b2;-hydroxy carbamate, ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the invention can be polymerized as a homopolymer or copolymerized with other monomers. The polymerization can be carried out in an aqueous medium. The &#x3b2;-hydroxy carbamate monomer is polymerized to form water-soluble homopolymers or, if polymerized as a mixture with one or more comonomers, copolymers that are soluble, emulsifiable, or dispersible in water. The &#x3b2;-hydroxy carbamate monomer can be used as a replacement monomer for acrylamide.

Monomer and polymerization process

The invention provides coating compositions comprising a reactive component (a) which is substantially free of any heteratoms and is a not a crystalline solid at room temperature and which comprises from (i) 12 to 72 carbon atoms, and (ii) at least two functional groups, and (b) a crosslinking agent comprising a plurality of functional groups (iii) reactive with the functional groups (ii) of compound (a), wherein functional groups (ii) and (iii) are selected such that reaction there between produces a thermally irreversible chemical linkage. The coating compositions of the invention provide improved solids, chip resistance, flexibility and/or scratch & mar resistance while maintaining desirable and/or improved performance characteristics with regard to environmental etch, relative humidity, QCT, chip resistance, thermoshock resistance, cold crack resistance, adhesion and the like.

Coating composition containing crosslinkable monomeric difunctional compounds having at least thirty carbon atoms

The invention provides a method of making a number of different multifunctional acrylic materials from a limited number of starting materials. The method of the invention requires the product of a masterbatch of an acrylic oligomer or polymer having two or more cyclic carbonate functional groups. A first portion of the masterbatch is then reacted with ammonia and a grafting material (c) in either successive or simultaneous reactions to provide a first multifunctional acrylic oligomer or polymer. Additional portions of the masterbatch may be reacted with ammonia and other grafting materials (c), different from the first grafting material (c), in either successive or simultaneous reactions to provide different multifunctional acrylic oligomers or polymers.

Method of preparing various multifunctional materials using limited starting reactants

The invention relates to a method of making waterborne multifunctional materials, especially waterborne multifunctional materials comprising at least one primary carbamate group and a grafting moiety (cii). The method of the invention requires the successive or simultaneous reactions of a material P with a grafting material (c) and ammonia. Material P comprises two or more cyclic carbonate groups (bi). Grafting material (c) comprises at least one amine group (ci) and a grafting moiety (cii). The amine group (ci) is selected from primary amines, secondary amines, and mixtures thereof. The resulting waterborne multifunctional materials may be water dispersible, water soluble and/or useful in electrodeposition coatings.

Method for determining the water solubility or water dispersibility of waterborne beta-hydroxy primary carbamate functional graft materials

The invention relates to a method of making multifunctional materials, especially materials comprising at least one primary carbamate group and a grafting moiety (cii). The method of the invention requires the successive or simultaneous reactions of a material P with a grafting material (c) and ammonia. Material P comprises two or more cyclic carbonate groups (bi). Grafting material (c) comprises at least one amine group (ci) and a grafting moiety (cii). The amine group (ci) is selected from primary amines, secondary amines, and mixtures thereof. The resulting multifunctional materials are useful in a variety of curable coating compositions, including solventborne, waterborne, electrodeposition, liquid solvent free coatings, powder, and powder slurry.

Water- and organic-soluble carbamate material

The invention provides water-soluble, &bgr;-hydroxy carbamate-functional materials and coating compositions, especially waterborne coating compositions, containing the carbamate-functional materials. The invention further provide a coating prepared from the coating composition and a coated substrate, especially an automotive substrate, having the coating thereon.

Water-soluble carbamate materials

The invention provides an aqueous coating composition containing a dispersed, emulsified, or dissolved material (organic compound, resin, or polymer), in which the material is dispersed, emulsified, or dissolved with a water-soluble, carbamate-functional material. The invention further provides a coating prepared from the coating composition and a coated substrate, especially an automotive substrate, having the coating thereon.

Waterborne coating compositions containing materials dispersed with water-soluble carbamate materials

The &bgr;-hydroxy carbamate, ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the invention can be polymerized as a homopolymer or copolymerized with other monomers.
