The demand regulator has a duct communicating a pressurized breathing gas admission with a tube connected to the inside of a breathing mask. Dilution air may be added to the breathing gas. A breathe-out valve opens from the tube to atmosphere. A manual control member has a normal position causing operation without an over pressure above atmosphere and with dilution and an emergency position causing the tube to be fed with pure breathing gas (typically oxygen) at high pressure. Operation with over pressure gas feed is prevented mechanically or pneumatically so long as the mask is being stored.

Individual respiratory gas supply device comprising a respiratory mask and a facial respirator of the cannula or respiratory flexible oro-nasal shell type for comfortably supplying a subject with respiratory gas during a high-altitude flight. The respiratory mask and the facial respirator are adapted so that in the event of de-pressurization or the presence of toxic gases, the subject equips himself with the respiratory mask possibly after having previously removed the facial respirator. A breathing apparatus for an aircraft crew member has a breathing mask provided with a demand regulator and connected to a source of breathing gas, such as a pressurized oxygen cylinder or preferably an OBOGS. The apparatus includes an individual buffer plenum specific to the mask on a line for feeding the regulator of the mask from the source. The volume of the plenum is sufficient to provide for at least two typical breaths of the mask wearer in succession. A non-return check valve is located between the plenum and the source.

A demand regulator with air dilution for regulating the pressure and flow of a respiratory gas comprises an inlet for additional gas and an outlet leading to a respiratory mask, and also dilution means. Control means switch a supply of pressurized additional gas between at least two passages. At least one of these passages corresponds to an economy flow and has a restricted cross section for limiting the flow of additional gas transmitted to the inlet. The other passage has a cross section which is such that the additional gas has a maximum flow in order to supply the user with additional gas in a physiologically sufficient manner.

In a method of regulating the flow rate of additional oxygen taken from a pressurized inlet for oxygen from a source and admitted into a breathing mask provided with an inlet for dilution ambient air, the ambient pressure and the instantaneous inhaled breathe-in flow rate in terms of volume reduced to ambient conditions are measured in real time. The minimum oxygen content in the complete inhalation phase in order to comply with respiratory standards is computed from the ambient pressure and the instantaneous flow rate of additional oxygen is controlled in such a manner as to satisfy the requirements of the applicable standards with a safety margin that is generally a few percent. A box for storage of passenger oxygen masks in an aircraft has a housing which contains a network for distributing oxygen from a general pipe or from a chemical generator and a door arranged to be beneath the box when it is in position in an aircraft. An inside face of the door or of the housing carries cradles defining a retaining position for each of the oxygen masks and latches that are displaceable responsive to closing the door from a position in which they define mask-retaining sockets to a position in which the latches release the masks.

A box for housing breathing masks in a passenger aircraft has a housing closed by a door and a pipe in the housing for delivering respiratory gas under a first pressure to the masks via a flexible line. In rest condition a catch holds the door in closed position. It may be disabled for providing access to the masks. A command, electrical or in the form of a second pneumatic pressure in the pipe, limits the opening of the box to a partially-open position preventing the masks from falling out upon release of the latch.

Protective breathing equipment comprises a breathing mask provided with a regulator for connection to a source of pressurized breathing gas and a harness having at least one extensible strap whose ends are connected to the mask and which includes an element that is temporarily inflatable by the pressurized gas to lengthen the strap until it is large enough to enable the user to engage the harness on the head, and exhaustible to allow the strap to press to press the mask against the face. The extensible strap is connected to the face-piece by at least one mechanical member of length that is adjustable by the user while wearing the equipment.
