Method and apparatus for providing generational copy control of a video signal. A digital video signal contains content information, first supplemental information and second supplemental information. The first supplemental information is represented by a watermark pattern, the second by a control pattern. Copying of the content information is only permitted if a predetermined combination of the first and second supplemental information is present. Pseudo-sync pulses are added to a blanking interval of an analog video signal converted from a digital video signal, the pulses representing the second supplemental information.

Generational copy control of a video signal

Method and apparatus for &ldquo;copy-once&rdquo; of a digital video signal uses a watermark in the video signal. The embedded watermark has two versions: one indicates copy-never and a second indicates copy-once, the difference being a single watermark bit. The watermark carries additional bits representing a digitized attribute (image characteristic) of a particular video frame of the video signal, for instance an average value of the amplitude of a video field. The frame whose attribute is carried in the watermark has a field (or frame) marker, which is a special signal located in the overscan portion of the frame. A compliant video recorder verifies the watermark and the copy-once bit, extracts the associated attribute from the watermark, and compares it to the measured attribute of the marked video frame. Only if the extracted attribute value and the measured attribute value match is recording enabled. During the recording process, the frame markers are stripped, preventing second generation copies of the recorded video signal, and the copy-once bit is set to copy-never.

An interactive high definition display system generates its own graphics display data, accepts multiple video signals and graphics display signals based upon multiple standards, and selectively produces therefrom an integrated video and graphics display featuring multiple images or compositing. The incoming video signals are decoded into their corresponding RGB signals, digitized and written into memory. The incoming and internally generated graphics display data signals are also written into memory. According to preprogrammed instructions, or interactively according to instructions received via a computer interface, an integrated, multiple image or composite display pattern with both active video and graphics display images can be generated by selecting from and arranging for display the stored video and graphics display data, and viewed on a high definition display or stored on a high definition video tape recorder.

An operator input subsystem and an image signal processing subsystem are provided to a digital image processing system. The operator input subsystem comprises a CPU, a display device and an input device, whereas the image signal processing subsystem comprises a digital signal processor having a number of digitized signal correctors. For cases where the output results are expressible as smoothly differentiable continuous functions of the digitized input signal values and the processing parameters, the CPU receives the specified output results from the input device and the digitized input signal values and the current processing parameters from the digitized signal correctors. In response, the CPU determines the most optimal processing parameters for the digitized signal correctors to achieve the specified output results. The CPU provides the determined optimal processing parameters to the digitized signal correctors, which in turn use the parameters to correct the digitized signals. The CPU makes the determination by performing a standard non-linear optimization of the smoothly differentiable continuous function. As a result, the increasingly difficult task of providing processing parameters to the image signal correctors is done automatically for the operator, thereby making the image processing system more efficient and user friendly.

A digital color correction system and method for correcting a color video signal representing a portion of a colored optical image by modifying the entire color space of each of the complementary colors which make up the color signal so that all objects which contain each color are modified at once. A correction means produces an output video signal having a plurality of complementary color components, each of which is related to a corresponding color component of the color video signal by a transfer function, and a modification means for independently modifying each of the transfer functions is provided. The entire color space for each color may be modified, or only selected portions of it. Thus, only objects falling within a desired range of the color space may be selectively modified.

Digital color correction system having gross and fine adjustment modes

A film scanning system and method for generating a digital signal representing digitized film images, and having a first (less than real-time) film frame rate, and performing digital correction (such as flare correction, color correction, or both) on the digital signal at a higher (but still less than real-time) frame rate. In a preferred embodiment, conventional video signals (having NTSC or format, or SMPTE-240M or another high definition video format) are then generated from the corrected digital signal. In one embodiment, the system of the invention includes circuitry for scanning color film frames to generate and store a digital signal (representing digitized color film images) at a rate of 1.875 film frames per second, circuitry for color correcting the stored digital signal at an internal processing rate of 7.5 frames per second, and means for generating SMPTE-240M high definition video signals (having a frame rate of 30 frames per second) from the color corrected digital signal.

A hardware implementation of a digitized image corrector is disclosed that converts a colorimetric representation of an original image into a new representation based upon the colors of the original and target images, as well as user supplied artistic parameters. The digitized image corrector receives digitized Red, Green and Blue input signals that comprise a colorimetric representation of an original film scene, and generates digitized Red, Green, and Blue output signals according to the specifications of SMPTE 240 M. The digitized image corrector is comprised of four identical hardware correction modules, which are coupled to receive correction parameters from an external source. Each module has a bypass switch for entering a bypass mode, which is used for reconfiguration of the module's correction parameters without affecting the output image. Each correction module receives digitized input signals and generates digitized output signals by transforming the digitized input signals according to a set of predetermined correction parameters and a transfer function defined by a matrix of functions.

A film-to-video frame image convertor includes a 3-2 pulldown frame convertor for converting signals representing input film frame images, having a lower associated film frame image rate, to signals representing output video frame images having a higher associated video frame image rate. The output video frame images consist of genuine and simulated video frame images, which correspond to actual input film frame images and multiple input film frame images, respectively, in accordance with a 3-2 film-to-video frame pulldown. Each genuine video frame image consists of two video field images corresponding to two actual film field images from the same film frame image. Each simulated video frame image consists of two video field images corresponding to two actual film field images from different film frame images, with one of the two video field images being a duplicate of a video field image in an adjacent video frame image. Identification signals are selectively inserted into the vertical blanking interval of some of the output video frame images to identify which ones are simulated video frame images containing duplicate video field images. This allows the duplicate video field images to be identified and selectively deleted when the video frame images, having the higher associated video frame image rate, are to be reconverted to film frame images having the lower associated film frame image rate.

A digital color correction system and method provide for color correction in a film-to-video signal conversion system. Film color correction is done by correcting incoming digitized film color signals (e.g. red, green and blue) according to film color correction parameters which represent film characteristics, such as film speed, gamma, and minimum and maximum film dye density. The film color correction parameters are used to sensitometrically convert the film color signals to video color signals according to a sensitometric film model, such as the Hurter-Driffield ('HD') characteristic curve. Video color correction is then performed upon the corrected film color signals according to video color correction parameters which represent video signal characteristics, such as hue and saturation, as well as a video color standard model, such as SMPTE 240M. Alternatively, separate signals representing the film or video color correction parameters can be encoded as separate data into the corrected or uncorrected color signals. This color correction or color correction parameter encoding can be done on a field-by-field, frame-by-frame or scene-by-scene basis, so that each resulting video field, frame or scene, respectively, is appropriately color corrected or contains its own specific color correction information.

A method and apparatus for quickly adding at least three multi-bit binary numbers. The addition is divided into two stages. In Stage I, each of the addends are grouped into like-ordered multi-bit clusters and the corresponding clusters of the addends are added together using Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) integrated circuits (ICs) yielding several intermediate sums. In Stage II, the intermediate sums are combined to yield a final sum using Programmable Array Logic (PAL, is a trademark of Monolithic Memories, Inc.) ICs. Furthermore, the final sum is rounded in Stage I (and clipped if necessary in a third stage) before being provided as output. Clipping is achieved by setting the output sum to zero if the final sum is negative and setting the output sum to a predetermined threshold value if the final sum exceeds the threshold value.

A method and system for generating a bordered split screen video display. In preferred embodiment, the invention generates a composite signal from digital signals representing reference and scanned film images, converts the composite signal to a composite video signal, and displays the composite video signal as a bordered split screen video display. The invention can be embodied in a film scanning system which includes a processor for digitally correcting a digital signal representing a digitized film image, such as by performing digital color correction on the digital signal. The film scanning system also includes field store circuitry for storing the corrected digital signal and a digital reference signal, circuitry for generating a composite signal from the stored reference and corrected signal, and circuitry for generating a composite video signal from the composite signal. In accordance with the invention, the composite video signal is displayed as a split screen composite image having a distinctive border between distinct test and reference picture areas. In a class of preferred embodiments, a graphics cursor signal is also inserted into the composite signal. When displayed, the cursor signal overlays a cursor region of the bordered split screen composite image.
