In a see-through waveguide-based HMD device configured to display holographic virtual images within a field of view (FOV) of a device user, a glint-based eye tracker illumination system provides infrared (IR) point sources at known locations having a predetermined angular distribution using optical components—including input and output couplers and diffusers—on a waveguide that is located in front of the user's eyes. An input coupler couples light from an IR source into the illumination system waveguide which is propagated to one or more output couplers. Separate diffuser elements aligned with the output couplers distribute the out-coupled IR light into a deterministic range of divergent angles to function as point sources for eye tracker glints. Various illustrative illumination system waveguide architectures are disclosed in which the optical components can be disposed on the same or opposite sides of the waveguide in dual-layered and dual-sided arrangements.

Techniques for generating electronics components that operate free of unwanted distortions such as edge diffraction and unwanted phase jumps are described. A modified production master or a modified working stamp can be implemented to generate an electronic or optical component having structures that are positioned within a desired distance from a planar surface. A production master or a working stamp is modified in dependence upon a comparison of an identified distance for each respective structure to the planar surface and a desired distance. The modified production master or the modified working stamp generates the electronic or optical component by positioning the structures in accordance with the desired distance. By positioning the structures in accordance with the desired distance, electronic components generated using the modified production master or the modified working stamp minimize distortions, such as a phase jump between the structures.

Generating electronic components

An apparatus for use in replicating an image associated with an input-pupil to an output-pupil includes a planar optical waveguide including a bulk-substrate, and also including an input-coupler, an intermediate-component and an output-coupler. The input-coupler couples light corresponding to the image into the bulk-substrate and towards the intermediate-component. The intermediate-component performs horizontal or vertical pupil expansion and directs the light corresponding to the image towards the output-coupler. The output-coupler performs the other one of horizontal or vertical pupil expansion and couples light corresponding to the image, which travels from the input-coupler to the output-coupler, out of the waveguide. The apparatus further includes an adjacent planar optical component to provide a more uniform intensity distribution compared to if the adjacent planar optical component were absent.

Waveguide coatings or substrates to improve intensity distributions having adjacent planar optical component separate from an input, output, or intermediate coupler

In making an optical component, one or more portions of a substrate's surface are patterned. At least a region of the substrate's surface is coated in negative photoresist, the region encompassing said portions. The negative photoresist becomes undevelopable when exposed to light. Light which forms a grating structure is projected over each of the portions. Light of substantially uniform intensity over the entirety of the region but for the portions, thereby leaving the negative photoresist outside of the portions undevelopable. The negative photoresist is developed so as to embody the grating structure in the photoresist covering the portions. The substrate's surface is patterned to impose the grating structure on the substrate's surface from the developed photoresist; the undevelopable photoresist inhibits patterning of the surface region outside of the portions. The optical component comprises the patterned substrate.

Display system

An apparatus for use in replicating an image associated with an input-pupil to an output-pupil includes a planar optical waveguide including a bulk-substrate, and also including an input-coupler, an intermediate-component and an output-coupler. The input-coupler couples light corresponding to the image into the bulk-substrate and towards the intermediate-component. The intermediate-component performs horizontal or vertical pupil expansion and directs the light corresponding to the image towards the output-coupler. The output-coupler performs the other one of horizontal or vertical pupil expansion and couples light corresponding to the image, which travels from the input-coupler to the output-coupler, out of the waveguide. In certain embodiments, one or more of the input-coupler, the intermediate-component or the output-coupler comprises a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) based surface relief grating (SRG) or a double-side diffractive optical element (DOE), each of which can be used to improve an intensity distribution of light output by the output-coupler.

Waveguide gratings to improve intensity distributions

A radiation window foil is provided for an X-ray radiation window. It includes a continuous window layer with a first side and a second side. A first mesh or grid layer is stacked on or bonded to the first side of the continuous window layer. A second mesh or grid layer is stacked on or bonded to the second side of the continuous window layer.

A semiconductor device comprises a piece of semiconductor material. On a surface of said piece of semiconductor material, a number of electrodes exist and are configured to assume different electric potentials. A guard structure comprises a two-dimensional array of conductive patches, at least some of which are left to assume an electric potential under the influence of electric potentials existing at said electrodes.

A waveguide has a front and a rear surface, the waveguide for a display system and arranged to guide light from a light engine onto an eye of a user to make an image visible to the user, the light guided through the waveguide by reflection at the front and rear surfaces. A first portion of the front or rear surface has a structure which causes light to change phase upon reflection from the first portion by a first amount. A second portion of the same surface has a different structure which causes light to change phase upon reflection from the second portion by a second amount different from the first amount. The first portion is offset from the second portion by a distance which substantially matches the difference between the second amount and the first amount.

Waveguide

A substantially transparent optical component, which comprises polymer, is molded. The optical component has substantially matching grating imprints on respective portions of its surface, which imprints have a substantially zero relative orientation angle. Substantially transparent molten polymer is forced between two surfaces of a molding component. The molten polymer is forced into contact with surface modulations which form two substantially matching gratings. An alignment portion is located so that light which has interacted with both gratings is observable when the substantially transparent polymer is between the surfaces. While the polymer is still liquid, the molding component is reconfigured from a current configuration to a new configuration in which the fringe spacing of a fringe pattern formed by the two gratings is substantially maximal, thus aligning the gratings to have a substantially zero relative orientation angle. The new configuration is maintained while the polymer sets.

Optical components

The following relates to assessing the quality of an optical component. The optical component comprises an arrangement of a first and a second optically transmissive component grating having a component relative orientation angle, and the quality is assessed in terms of a deviation of the component relative orientation angle from a desired relative orientation angle. A master component comprises a substantially matching arrangement of a first and a second optically transmissive master grating having the desired relative orientation angle. The components are supported with the first and second component gratings in the vicinity of the first and second master gratings, and first and second fringe patterns formed by the first gratings and second gratings respectively are used to output a quality assessment, which is based on the fringe spacing of the second fringe pattern when the fringe spacing of the first fringe pattern is substantially maximal.

A semiconductor radiation detector includes a bulk layer of semiconductor material. On a first side of said bulk layer is an arrangement of field electrodes and a collection electrode for collecting radiation-induced signal charges from said bulk layer. A radiation shield exists on a second side of said bulk layer, opposite to said first side, which radiation shield selectively overlaps the location of said collection electrode.

A radiation detector comprises a piece of semiconducting material. On its surface, a number of consecutive electrode strips are configured to assume electric potentials of sequentially increasing absolute value. A field plate covers the most of a separation between a pair of adjacent electrode strips and is isolated from the most of said separation by an electric insulation layer. A bias potential is coupled to said field plate so that attracts surface-generated charge carriers.
