Glass-based articles comprise stress profiles providing improved fracture resistance. The stress profiles contain a high peak tension and a region with a high degree of negative curvature. The glass-based articles herein provide high fracture resistance after multiple drops.

Fracture resistant stress profiles in glasses

Methods of manufacturing a glass-based article includes exposing a glass-based substrate having a lithium aluminosilicate composition to an ion exchange treatment to form the glass-based article. The ion exchange treatment including a molten salt bath having a concentration of a sodium salt in a range from 8 mol % to 100 mol %. The glass-based article includes sodium having a non-zero varying concentration extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of the glass-based article The glass-based article has compressive stress layer extending from the surface to a spike depth of layer from 4 micrometers to 8 micrometers. The glass-based article includes a molar ratio of potassium oxide (KO) to sodium oxide (NaO) averaged over a distance from the surface to a depth of 0.4 micrometers that is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1.8.

Scratch resistant glass and method of making

Glass-based articles comprise stress profiles providing improved fracture resistance and decreased weight gain. The glass-based articles are produced with a single-step ion exchange process.

Glass-based articles with fracture resistant stress profiles

In embodiments, a glass includes from 45 mol % to 70 mol % SiO; from 11.5 mol % to 25 mol % AlO; from 2 mol % to 20 mol % LiO; from greater than 0 mol % to 10 mol % NaO; from 9 mol % to 19 mol % MgO; from 4 mol % ZrO; and from 0 mol % to 0.5 mol % TiO. Ion exchangeable glasses having high fracture toughness

A strengthened glass having a stress profile that differs from error-function and parabolic profiles. Stress relaxation and thermal annealing/diffusion effects, which occur at longer ion exchange and/or anneal times increase the depth of compression of the surface layer. A method of achieving these effects is also provided.

Also disclosed are glass-based articles having a thickness (t) in a range of 0.1 mm and 2 mm; and wherein at least one point of the stress profile in a first thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.020·t and greater than 0.98·t comprises a tangent with a slope of from about −200 MPa/micrometer to about −25 MPa/micrometer or about 25 MPa/micrometer to about 200 MPa/micrometer, and wherein all points of the stress profile in a second thickness range from about 0.035·t and less than 0.965·t comprise a tangent with a slope of from about −15 MPa/micrometer to about 15 MPa/micrometer.

Glass-based articles including a stress profile comprising two regions

A lithium containing glass article is provided. In aspects, the lithium containing glass article includes an intensity coupling profile including a plurality of coupling resonances. A first of the coupling resonances has a half-width half-maximum value that is at least 1.8 times greater than the half-width half-maximum value of a second of the coupling resonances. In aspects, the lithium containing glass article includes a smoothed intensity coupling profile including a plurality of coupling resonances. A second derivative of the smoothed intensity coupling profile at a first of the coupling resonances is at least 1.8 times greater than a second derivative of the smoothed coupling profile at a second of the coupling resonances.

Glass-based articles are provided with improved stress profiles. The glass-based articles provide improved drop performance and damage resistance. The glass-based articles may be produced with a single ion exchange treatment.

Glass-based articles with improved stress profiles

Glass-based articles comprise stress profiles providing improved scratch resistance. A glass-based article comprises a lithium aluminosilicate composition and a molar ratio of potassium oxide (KO) to sodium oxide (NaO) averaged over a distance from the surface to a depth of 0.4 micrometers that is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1.8. The article comprises sodium having a non-zero varying concentration extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of the glass-based article and a spike depth of layer that is greater than or equal to 4 micrometers and less than or equal to 8 micrometers. The article may comprise an average compressive stress of greater than or equal to 150 MPa over a depth from 15 micrometers to 40 micrometers.

A method of reworking lithium containing ion exchanged glass articles is provided. The method includes a reverse ion exchange process that returns the glass article to approximately the composition of the glass from which the glass article was produced, before being subjected to ion exchange. The reworked glass articles exhibit a KO concentration profile comprising a portion wherein a KO concentration increases to a local KO concentration maximum.
