Novel imido copolymers having improved thermal properties and well adapted for the production, e.g., of molded and cellular shaped articles, and laminates, are formed from (a) at least one N,N'-bis(maleimide), (b) at least one hindered diprimary diamine, e.g., of 4,4'-diamino-3,3',5,5'-tetraalkyldiphenylmethane or 1,3- or 1,4-(diamino)trialkylbenzene type, and, optionally, either (c.sub.1) at least one N-[(meth)allyloxyphenyl]maleimide or (c.sub.2) admixture of at least one N-[(meth)allyloxyphenyl]maleimide with at least one N-[(meth)allyloxymono/di(meth)allylphenyl]maleimide.

Novel nonlinearly optically active polymers, well suited for electrooptical applications, are prepared by copolymerizing a first difunctional monomer with a second difunctional comonomer, with at least one of such difunctional monomers including a polar charge transfer moiety containing at least one electron acceptor group and at least one electron donor group (D), and further wherein the polymerizable functional groups are borne by the one or more electron donor groups (D).

Nonlinearly optically active polymers

The present invention relates to heat-resistant threads, filaments and fibres based on polyamide-imide. They have a polydispersion index I.ltoreq.2.2, a breaking tenacity.gtoreq.45 cN/tex, a Young's modulus.gtoreq.3.8 GPa, an elongation.ltoreq.25% and a color defined by the luminance Y&gt;25%, the degree of whiteness DW&lt;30 and the yellow index YI&gt;170. In addition they have a very good stability to light, quantified by the retention of the mechanical characteristics. They have wide application in working and protective garments.

Polyamide-imide based filaments, and a process for obtaining them

The present invention relates to spinnable and mouldable polyamide-imide solutions as well as the process for their preparation. They contain 4 to 35% of a polyamide-imide having a polydispersity index.ltoreq.2.1 in a solvent mixture containing 45-100% by weight of DMEU and 0-55% of an aprotic polar solvent. They are obtained by the reaction, in dimethylethyleneurea of pH.ltoreq.7 as polycondensation solvent, of a diisocyanate, an aromatic acid anhydride, optionally an alkali or alkaline earth dicarboxybenzene sulphonate and optionally another aromatic dicarboxylic acid, the polyamide-imide concentration therefore being from 4 to 35%, then by dilution in a polar solvent at a temperature of between 120.degree. and 200.degree. C. The solutions thus obtained are limpid at ambient temperature, capable of being stored and have an improved color.

Marterials which are active in nonlinear optics, having a repeating unit of the following formula I: ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, are either identical or different, and denote a linear or branched methylenic chain, preferably containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 is an aliphatic, aromatic or arylaliphatic hydrocarbon radical; R.sub.4 and R.sub.5, which are identical or different, denote a nitrogen atom or a CH radical, or alternatively R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are both carbon with the R.sub.4 -R.sub.5 bond being a double or a triple bond; and Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2, which are identical or different, denote an aromatic group wherein Z.sub.1 optionally contains one or more substituents R.sub.7 and wherein Z.sub.2 optionally contains one or more substituents R.sub.7 in addition to group A, each substituent R.sub.7 may be lower alkyl, halogen, amido, amino, sulfoxide, hydroxyl radical, alkoxy and trifluoromethyl; and A denotes an electron-acceptor group, with Z.sub.2 having one or more groups A.

Novel nonlinearly optically active polyurethane polymers, well suited for electrooptical applications, have recurring structural units of the formula: ##STR1## in which m is a number greater than 5; R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, which may be identical or different, are each a saturated or unsaturated alkyl or aromatic radical; R.sub.3 is a linear aliphatic, or cyclic aromatic or arylaliphatic hydrocarbon radical; and Y is a group including a radical containing dislocated .pi. electrons and an electron acceptor group (A).

Novel nonlinearly optically active polyurethanes

The present invention relates to solutions of polyamide-imides which can be spun and shaped, and to a process for their preparation. They contain 5 to 30% of a polyamide-imide in a solvent mixture comprising 40-80% by weight of butyrolactone and 20-60% of an aprotic amide solvent. They are obtained by the reaction, in butyrolactone as polycondensation solvent, of a diisocyanate, an aromatic acid anhydride, optionally an alkali or alkaline-earth metal dicarboxybenzenesulfonate, and optionally another aromatic diacid, the concentration of polyamide-imide being from 15 to 36%, followed by dilution in an amide solvent, at a temperature between 120.degree. and 165.degree. C. The solutions obtained are clear at room temperature, are storable, and possess improved color.

Novel N-[(meth)allyloxy-mono-/di(meth)allylphenyl]maleimides, in admixture with at least one N-[(meth)allyloxyphenyl]maleimide, are reacted with at least one bismaleimide, and optionally a hydroxylated organosilicon compound, in the presence of an imidazole compound, to obtain mechanically improved thermosetting imido copolymerizates well adapted for the production of, e.g., coatings, adhesive bondings, laminates and composites.
