Networks for exchanging packet signals between first network-units () like access providers and/or access multiplexers coupled to terminals and second network-units () like service providers and/or gateways coupled to further networks can be improved by providing a network with a pooled connection () having a capacity smaller than a sum of all terminal-capacities, which sum equals the capacity necessary in case all terminals communicate via the network at the same time. This pooled connection () is located between said first () and second () network-unit and is managed by a manager () in said second network-unit (). By providing a first network-unit () with a router () managed by a manager (), control traffic can be routed transparently to said second network-unit (). By providing a manager () in the second network-unit () with a controller (), the capacity of said pooled connection () can be controlled and guarded.

The present invention relates to a network status reporting method, for reporting in a communications network a network status to a data source with an adaptive transmission rate. The data sink reports the network status to the data source in order to enable the data source to adapt the transmission rate based on the network status. The communications network further contains at least one intermediate network node, and a data sink. Only the data sink reports to the data source on a status of the communications network in its neighborhood, and no intermediate network node reports to the data source on said network status of the communications network.

Network status reporting method and a communications network

The present invention relates to a scheduling unit adapted to aggregate data units from a plurality of input ports to a common output port according to a service sequence. The service sequence identifies which particular input port must be served for a particular service slot. A scheduling unit according to the present invention features optimized jitter and queue occupancy figures. This is achieved by allotting a number of service slots to each input port in proportion to its service share, next by determining for each input port a corresponding number of candidate positions uniformly spaced over the service sequence, finally by resolving any contention between the so-determined candidate positions. A service slot is assigned first and foremost to the input port which has the highest number of candidate positions considered while determining the service sequence yet not assigned to any service slot, next which gets the highest service share.

Scheduling unit with optimized jitter and queue occupancy

A method for prioritized data transmission to a common transmission medium from a plurality of interface modules coupled to it, for interfacing at least one input bitstream with said common transmission medium, whereby access is arbitrated on the basis of a module priority of each interface module, is such that, for at least one interface module, the module priority is dependent on at least one connection parameter associated to packets of said at least one input bitstream. An arrangement for performing this method is described as well as several variant implementations of the method and the arrangement.
