A system provides file aware block level deduplication in a system having multiple clients connected to a storage subsystem over a network such as an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The system includes client components and storage subsystem components. Client components include a walker that traverses the namespace looking for files that meet the criteria for optimization, a file system daemon that rehydrates the files, and a filter driver that watches all operations going to the file system. Storage subsystem components include an optimizer resident on the nodes of the storage subsystem. The optimizer can use idle processor cycles to perform optimization. Sub-file compression can be performed at the storage subsystem.

File aware block level deduplication

Techniques are disclosed for redirecting fiber channel data transmitted between nodes in a fiber channel fabric. The redirection allows traffic sent from a host to a target in a storage area network (SAN) to flow through a cascade of applications provided by certain nodes of the fabric (or in some cases, by external appliances). That is, techniques are disclosed for application chaining in the SAN. Doing so allows the SAN to be used as a true network platform for providing a variety of intelligent services within the network (e.g., data migration, encryption, etc).

Introducing cascaded intelligent services in a SAN environment

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for redirecting fiber channel data that is transmitted between a first and a second node, such as a host and target, in a storage area network (SAN) to an intelligent node that facilitates implementation of a service on such redirected data. Such redirection is provided transparently with respect to the first and second nodes without significantly reconfiguring the existing infrastructure of the first and second nodes. In a specific Fiber Channel implementation, the redirection is accomplished without rewiring any of the nodes in the network fabric or reconfiguring zones or virtual storage area networks (VSANs). In general, such redirection is accomplished by rewriting the data as it traverses on a path between the first and second node towards an original destination (e.g., the first or second node) so that the data is redirected to an intelligent node. The intelligent node then facilitates implementation of a service on such redirected data and then forwards the serviced data back to its original destination. In one example, setup of this redirection function is accomplished simply by making a request to a network device (e.g., a host and/or target switch) in the first and second node's communication path, where the request identifies the first node, the second node, and the intelligent node.

A method and device for detecting and handling non-responsive devices in a computer system where the device non-responsiveness may be due to a powered-down status rather than a device failure, and more particularly to such computer systems when the devices are RAID disk drives. By scanning all devices connected in a configuration and maintaining a count of devices that time out without responding, a determination can be made as to whether the devices are powered off or are experiencing some other problem that requires attention of a system support technician.
