An on-line battery management and monitoring system and method for monitoring a plurality of battery cells identifies and computes individual cell and battery bank operating parameters. The system comprises a central monitoring station to which a plurality of controllers is connected, each controller having a plurality of battery cells which it monitors. Features of the invention include the following: display of measurement and alarm condition data for each of the battery cells connected to each of the controllers; color-coded display of data for a battery cell, the display color being dependent upon the condition of the battery; performance of data analysis and initiation of necessary maintenance requests; operation of the controllers in an automatic local mode, automatic remote mode, or maintenance mode; provision for periodic calls from the controllers to the central monitoring station; and generation of red alarm calls, yellow alarm calls, downscale alarm calls, and diagnostic calls between the central monitoring station and the controllers.

On-line battery management and monitoring system and method

An on-line battery monitoring system for monitoring a plurality of battery cells identifies and computes individual cell and battery bank operating parameters. The system comprises a controller for designating a given battery cell to be monitored, a multiplexer responsive to designation by the controller for selecting a given battery cell to be monitored or for selecting a battery pack to be monitored, an analog board for receiving electrical signals from a given battery cell for providing an output representing measurement of a parameter (voltage, temperature, and the like) of the given battery cell, a voltage sensor circuit for sensing voltage appearing across positive and negative terminals of the battery pack, and a control board responsive to address information for selectively initiating a load test, battery bank charging, or common-mode voltage measurement.

On-line battery monitoring system with defective cell detection

A lightning ranging device which utilizes two frequencies in the field generated by a lightning discharge to determine range. The relative amplitudes of the outputs from two tuned receiver channels varies with distance from the lightning stroke. A two-dimensioned look-up table with two inputs and one output can be utilized to output the range. The original ratio of the amplitudes of the two frequencies can be determined empirically from experimental data and amplification factors on the two frequency channels are pre-set at different levels to compensate for this difference in the original energy level.

Lightning and storm warning method and apparatus

The disclosed flow monitoring apparatus has a flow-varied sensing capacitance and an inductor in a series-resonant circuit that modulates the frequency of an oscillator. In one apparatus, the sensing capacitance comprises a flow-activated vaned rotor whose blades sweep past a very small capacitive sensing electrode, for monitoring flow rates. In other apparatus a flow-activated blade is biased to remain opposite a very small capacitive sensing electrode, to provide on/off flow indication.

Flow-responsive apparatus

A respiration and heart rate monitoring apparatus includes a mechanical-electric apparatus for detecting chest movements and electrodes for detecting electric impulses associated with heartbeat. A highly sensitive detector includes a transducer crystal mounted in bridge-like configuration on pair of spaced piers connected by at least one flexible beam member. The transducer crystal and electrodes may be connected to circuitry for producing indications of respiration and heart rate. The circuitry blocks detection of chest motion substantially coincident with the impulses associated with heartbeat to inhibit erroneous indications of respiration caused by chest motion due to heartbeat. The circuitry also may block small, single polarity signals to inhibit erroneous indications of respiration caused by muscle noise.

Respiration and heart rate monitoring apparatus

A system for locating and determining the distance to an object with respect to a movable vehicle is provided which utilizes at least three transducers wherein at least two of the three transducers operates either as a receiver transducer, in which case the remaining transducer operates as a transmitter transducer, or two of the three transducers operate as transmitter transducers in which case the remaining transducer operates as a receiver transducer with the system also including means for sequentially operating the three transducers for sending and receiving reflected ultrasonic signals to simultaneously determine both the location and distance of persons or objects with respect to the transducers.

Object indicator for moving vehicles

A circuit deriving an output voltage that is proportional to the logarithm of a DC input voltage susceptible to wide variations in amplitude includes a constant current source which forward biases a diode so that the diode operates in the exponential portion of its voltage versus current characteristic, above its saturation current. The constant current source includes first and second, cascaded feedback, DC operational amplifiers connected in a negative feedback circuit. An input terminal of the first amplifier is responsive to the input voltage. A circuit shunting the first amplifier output terminal includes a resistor in series with the diode. The voltage across the resistor is sensed at the input of the second DC operational feedback amplifier. The feedback voltage derived from the output of the second amplifier is subtracted by the first amplifier from the input voltage so that the current flowing through the resistor is proportional to the input voltage over the wide range of variations in amplitude of the input voltage.
