Compositions of ethylene alkyl acrylate grafted onto a polyolefin such as isotactic polypropylene are provided. The composition is highly wettable by adding both a polar group material and a hydrophilic modifier to the polypropylene. The hydrophilic modifier comprises a monoglyceride and a salt of a linear alkyl. The process comprises extruding the polyolefin into a fiber which is spinnable and may be used to form woven or nonwoven materials. The composition products are particularly well suited for forming various goods, including diaper coverstock, personal hygiene pads, battery separators, filters, tea bag pouches and filter stock.

Wettable polyolefin fiber compositions and method

Compositions of ethylene alkyl acrylate grafted onto polypropylene are dyeable with disperse or cationic dyes. A small amount of polyester may be include, along with a hydrophilic modifier comprising a monoglyceride and a salt of a liner alkyl. The hydrophilic modifier also acts as a compatibilizer to bridge the polyester and the polypropylene. A process for dyeing polypropylene fibers comprises combining the polypropylene with a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene and alkyl acrylates having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group into fibers, adding the polyester to the polypropylene matrix, spinning the composition into fibers, and exposing the fibers to a dye bath. The sulfonic group may be added to the polyester for exposing the fibers to a cationic dye.

Dyeable polyolefin compositions and method

Disperse dyeable compositions of ethylene alkyl acrylate grafted onto polypropylene are provided. A process for disperse dyeing polypropylene fibers is provided. This process comprises (a) extruding the polypropylene with about 2 to 10% by weight of a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene and alkyl acrylates having one to four carbon atoms in the alkyl group into fibers, and (b) exposing the fibers to a disperse dye bath containing a selected disperse dye.

Dyeable polyolefin compositions and dyeing polyolefin compositions

Disperse dyeable compositions of ethylene alkylacrylate grafted onto polyolefin (isotactic polypropylene) are provided. A process for disperse dyeing polyolefin (isotactic polypropylene) shaped into articles such as fibers is provided. This process comprises (1) extruding the polyolefin with about 2 to 30 percent by weight of a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene and alkylacrylates having one or four carbons in the alkyl group into fibers, and (2) exposing the fibers to a disperse dye bath containing a disperse dye.

A breathable metallized polyolefin film is prepared by: melt embossing a highly filled polyolefin film to impose a pattern of different film thickness therein; stretching the melt embossed film to impart greater permeability in the area of reduced thickness in comparison to the areas of greater thickness; and coating the resulting stretched embossed film with a suitable metal.

Metallized breathable films prepared from melt embossed

Composite breathable film comprising a breathable polyolefin film heat laminated to a nonwoven HDPE fabric. Preferably, the breathable film is prepared by melt embossing a highly filled polyolefin film to impose a pattern of different film thickness therein, and stretching the embossed film. The nonwoven fabric is made by cross-laminating HDPE fibers at the crossing points to form a thin open mesh fabric, and coextruding a heat seal layer thereon. The composite is made by heat laminating the breathable film to the heat seal layer of the fabric. The resulting laminate has excellent water vapor transmissibility, air resistance and strength and is particularly adapted for use as a housewrap.
