A rotary steerable drilling system can be positioned in a subterranean formation to steer a drill to form a wellbore in the subterranean formation. An orientation of a steering valve, which is positioned in the rotary steerable drilling system, can be adjusted to cover each channel of one or more channels of a valve seat adjacent the steering valve to deactivate each steering pad of one or more steering pads of the rotary steerable drilling system. The orientation of the steering valve can be adjusted to activate at least one steering pad of the one or more steering pads of the rotary steerable drilling system.

The disclosed system and method provide improved control for steering a drill bit by obtaining dimension measurements of the wellbore proximate a drill bit and considering the dimension measurements to adjust one or more of the drilling parameters in real time. The present disclosure describes gain stabilization techniques for scintillation devices which do not require use of an intrinsic reference radiation source. Reference light pulses are emitted into the scintillation device to obtain a signal having a given magnitude. The magnitude of the signal is compared to the magnitude of a reference signal computed as a function of temperature and a degradation factor. A gain adjustment is computed which causes the magnitude of the signal to match the target reference magnitude. The gain adjustment is then used to adjust the system gain so that subsequent output signal amplitudes, measured when energetic photons interact in the scintillator, always correspond to the same energy.

A body of a shear pin can be positioned in a pad stopper of a steering pad of a rotary steerable system. The rotary steerable system can be used to steer a drill in a wellbore. The steering pad can be positioned on the rotary steerable system such that a head of the shear pin is coupled with a lateral pad of the rotary steerable system. The head of the shear pin can deactivate the steering pad by preventing the steering pad from actuating. A fluid pulse can be output in the wellbore to break the shear pin for enabling the steering pad to actuate to cause the rotary steerable system to steer the drill in the wellbore.

This disclosure presents a process for communications in a borehole containing a fluid or drilling mud, where a conventional mud pulser can be utilized to transmit data to a transducer. The transducer, or a communicatively coupled computing system, can perform pre-processing steps to correct the received data using an average of a moving time window of the received data, and then normalize the corrected data. The corrected data can then be utilized as inputs into a machine learning mud pulse recognition network where the data can be classified and an ideal or clean pulse waveform can be overlaid the corrected data. The overlay and the corrected data can be fed into a conventional decoder or decoded by the disclosed process. The decoded data can then be communicated to another system and used as inputs, such as to a well site controller to enable adjustments to well site operation parameters.

Such parasitic reactions can undesirably impact operating performance by altering the pH and/or state of charge of one or both electrolyte solutions in a flow battery. Electrochemical balancing cells can allow rebalancing of electrolyte solutions to take place. Electrochemical balancing cells suitable for placement in fluid communication with both electrolyte solutions of a flow battery can include: a first chamber containing a first electrode, a second chamber containing a second electrode, a third chamber disposed between the first chamber and the second chamber, an ion-selective membrane forming a first interface between the first chamber and the third chamber, and a bipolar membrane forming a second interface between the second chamber and the third chamber.
