The present invention relates to polygalactomannan compositions, and more particularly cationic guar gum compositions, which, when crosslinked with glyoxal, from discrete guar particles which are capable of being easily dispersed in water which permits subsequent processing of the guar, such as washing. The guar and its derivatives are desirable for use in applications such as personal care, household care products and the like.

Dispersible cationic polygalactomannan polymers for use in personal care and household care applications

A personal or household care product includes cationic, nonionic or cationic/nonionic derivatized polysaccharide in combination with a phosphate ester surfactant. The derivatized polysaccharide polymer is formed by reacting the polysaccharide ester surfactant for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature in the presence of water, caustic, and at least one surfactant. The polysaccharide polymer may optionally be reacted with an oxidizing agent, hydrolytic or proteolytic enzymes, molecular weight reducing agents and a cationizing agent and nonionic agent. The formed derivatized polysaccharide has a lower clarity in water than in an aqueous surfactant system.

Polysaccharide products with improved performance and clarity in phosphate ester surfactant-based aqueous formulations and process for preparation

A process for producing anionic, nonionic, amphoteric or cationic derivatized polysaccharide products which demonstrate high clarity in surfactant-based compositions. The polysaccharide polymer is reacted for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature in the presence of water, caustic, and at least one surfactant. The polysaccharide polymer may optionally be reacted with an oxidizing agent, hydrolytic or proteolytic enzymes, molecular weight reducing agents and a cationizing agent and nonionic agent. The formed derivatized polysaccharide has a lower clarity in water than in an aqueous surfactant system. The derivatized polysaccharide product can be used in personal care and or household care products.

The present invention relates to a personal care composition additive for use on keratin substrates in order to provide long lasting benefits to the keratin substrate such as in conditioning systems, such as 2/1 shampoo's, leave-on and rinse off conditioners, for hair and skin, or for imparting greater water resistance to such personal care compositions as sunscreens or cosmetics.

A composition containing sulfonated keratin with molecular weight distribution of about 96.8% 100 kDa to 100 Da and about 3.2% 250 kDa to 100 kDa, at least one cationic surfactant, and optionally an aqueous carrier. Generally the keratin is produced by a method involving treating wool with about 0.5 to about 1.0N NaOH in a bath volume:wool weight of about 5:1 to about 10:1 at about 40&#xb0; C. to about 65&#xb0; C. for about 4 to about 8 hours with dosing about every 1 to 3 hours with about 1% to about 10% by weight of bath of hydrogen peroxide. Also a method for treating a keratin based substrate involving contacting or applying the substrate (e.g., hair) with the composition.

This cationic, oxidized polysaccharide is prepared in continuous or batch processes using hydrolytic reagents, oxidizing reagents, or combination of hydrolytic reagents and oxidizing reagents. A composition of a cationic polygalactomannan or a derivative of cationic polygalactomannans is provided that has a mean average molecular weight (Mw) having a lower limit of 5,000 and an upper limit of 200,000 and has a light transmittance in a 10% aqueous solution of greater than 80% at a light wavelength of 600 nm and a protein content of less than 1.0% by weight of polysaccharide, and aldehyde functionality content of at least of 0.01 meq/gram. This composition is prepared in continuous or batch processes using either oxidizing reagents or combination of hydrolytic reagents and oxidizing reagents. This composition is used in personal care and household care products.
