Methods and related systems are described relating to processing subsurface sonic and seismic data. The described techniques use anisotropy estimates derived from a walkaway VSP to calibrate elastic properties derived from sonic logs. An empirical relationship between the sonic derived anisotropy parameters is modified until the upscaled elastic properties from the sonic log data best matches the anisotropy parameters measured with the walkway VSP. The result is a set of elastic constants consistent with the walkaway VSP measurements.

Methods and systems for acoustically determining reservoir parameters of subterranean formations. A tool comprising a plurality of acoustic sources and configured for acoustic measurements is deployed within a wellhole. Acquired acoustic data are processed and utilized for deriving key parameters for the formations. The plurality of acoustic sources include a plurality of hammer sources, where at least one of the hammer sources includes an actuator that is adapted to strike a surface to generate acoustic energy.

Methods and systems for acoustically monitoring formations

A method of monitoring acoustic activity in a formation from a wellbore includes positioning a flow manipulation device into the wellbore, the flow manipulation device defining a flow path through which fluid may flow. Fluid is then pumped into the wellbore and through the manipulation device. A sensor disposed near the manipulation device is then coupled to the formation, the formation is fractured with fluid, and acoustic events in the formation are detected with the sensor.

Method and apparatus for detecting acoustic activity in a subsurface formation

Methods and related systems are described for downhole positioning of sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, tiltmeters and geophones. The sensor or sensors are mounted within the spherical rotor of a spherical motor such that the device can be actively positioned in one or more orientations by activating the spherical motor.
