A powder of a composite material comprising a non-evaporable getter material with a palladium coating continuously sorbs hydrogen. Embodiments in which the coverage of the palladium coating over the particles of the NEG material is complete can sorb hydrogen without the need for an activation treatment. Other embodiments in which the palladium coverage is less than total but greater than about 10% can also sorb gaseous species other than hydrogen. Loose powders, pressed powders, and sintered powders of the composite material are incorporated into getter devices and into the evacuated spaces of double-walled pipes, dewars, and thermal bottles. Methods for preparing powders of these composite materials utilize evaporative, sputter, and CVD deposition techniques. Another method prepares powders of the composite material by a liquid phase impregnation process.

A thermally insulating jacket under reversible vacuum, having an inner wall, an outer wall and an hollow space between these walls. The hollow space is in fluid communication with an outer housing containing a reversible non-evaporable hydrogen getter loaded with hydrogen. The reversible hydrogen getter has a certain hydrogen equilibrium pressure. The hollow space contains a non-evaporable promoter getter having a certain hydrogen equilibrium pressure. These jackets can be employed with heat accumulators, batteries, cryogenic vessels, cryogenic pipes, catalytic silencers and solar panels.

An evaporable getter device, for mounting in an electron tube, comprises a holder whose bottom wall is provided with means for preventing detachment of getter metal vapor releasing material which has been pressed into the holder and which has a multiplicity of means which retard the transmission of heat in a circumferential direction through the getter metal vapor releasing material. When the getter device is heated by currents induced from a radio-frequency field generated by a coil positioned outside the electron tube large amounts of getter metal are released in a short time without detachment of material from the holder. A modular getter pump includes a first and a second supporting electrode. At least one strip of high ohmic resistance material is connected to and supported by the first and second supporting electrodes. The strip of high ohmic resistance material has a length much greater than its width and only a nominal thickness and is pleated into flat substantially parallel zones which are uniformly separated from each other. The pleated strip forms a substrate having a non-evaporable getter metal at least partially embedded therein. A rod means is orthogonally positioned with respect to the width of the pleated strip for maintaining the separation between adjacent parallel zones. Such modular getter pumps can be used singularly or in a multiple array to sorb gases in closed vessels such as, for example, fusion reactors, particle accelerators, storage rings, neutral beam injectors, and others.
