A method for producing a solid body of glass is described. The method comprises providing a polymerisable composition, curing the polymerisable composition to obtain a cured body, subjecting the cured body to thermal debinding to substantially remove the organic components in the cured body, and subjecting the cured body to sintering to obtain a solid body of silica glass. The polymerisable composition one or more at least partially organic polymerisable compound(s) which form a liquid composition at operating temperature and a solid source of silica as colloidal silica particles or silica glass micro-/nanoparticles dispersed in the liquid composition. The one or more at least partially organic polymerisable compounds comprises at least one organosilicon compound as a second source of silica that is liquid or solubilisable in the liquid composition at operating temperature to thereby increase the silica loading of the cured body prior to sintering. Compositions and methods for producing solid glass objects by additive manufacturing are also described.

The invention provides a porous glass ceramic composition manufactured using conventional raw materials and one or more waste materials, wherein the waste materials are capable of producing glass forming oxides, glass modifying oxides and pore forming oxides. The waste materials are selected from a group that includes cullet, pozzolanic waste and fly ash. The invention also provides a method for manufacturing the porous glass ceramic composition.

In accordance with the invention there are devices and processes for making ceramic nanofiber mats and ceramic filters for use in high temperature and in corrosive environments. The process for forming a ceramic filter can include electrospinning a preceramic polymer solution into a preceramic polymer fiber having a diameter from about 10 nm to about 1 micron and forming a preceramic polymer fiber web from the preceramic polymer fiber onto a collector. The process can also include pyrolyzing the preceramic polymer fiber web to form a ceramic nanofiber mat having a diameter less than the diameter of the preceramic polymer fiber, the ceramic nanofiber mat comprising one or more of an oxide ceramic and a non-oxide ceramic such that the ceramic fiber mat can withstand temperature greater than about 1000 &#xb0; C.
