A system for monitoring the state of health of a patient suffering from respiratory disease including a portable medical device, the device including: a) a flow measurement device performing a spirometry measurement, and b) a reflecting photometric sensor performing an oxygen measurement or a measurement of blood oxygen saturation and heart rate. The system includes storage and comparison units in which a personalised plan of action for the patient is stored against which the spirometry and/or oxygen measurement data found are compared, displaying the result of such comparison on the display of a device connected to the internet so as to define the patient's state of health and identify exacerbation of the disease on the basis of data obtained from both such spirometry and oxygen measurements. A method for monitoring the health of a patient suffering from respiratory disease implemented through the system indicated above is also claimed.

Medical instrument

An integrated tele-health system/device for monitoring and reporting medical information for the evidence-based management of patients with chronic respiratory disease. The device includes a central unit which measures and collects information related to the state of health of the patient, and is provided with elements for wireless or cable transmission of the collected data using a microprocessor based system with a touch screen display, USB communication port and Bluetooth. The device further includes: a removable sensor for the measurement of respiratory air flow and volume, a removable pulse oximetry sensor and a motion sensor. Stored data can be then delivered through landline, broadband, wireless and cell-phone technology to be received by a web server and can then be accessed by medical staff. Being completely portable, the device is provided with a battery of known type, which can be substituted by the user or can be rechargeable.

Portable device for monitoring and reporting of medical information for the evidence-based management of patients with chronic respiratory disease

A method and system of patient monitoring, the system performs short term acquisition of the plethysmographic waveform of a patient from a portable blood oxygenation level monitoring device and establishes whether the patient has an episode of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) or has a Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR) or any other not-specific rhythm irregularity. Such classification is implemented directly in the device, suitable for at home use, and the result of the classification is displayed automatically using a three-state, traffic-light indicator.
