Method of manufacturing a high impact polarized optical element and polarized optical element including an integrally bonded polarizing film

A method of manufacturing a polarized optical element comprises the steps of: The method allows to reliably manufacture a polarized optical element comprising an optical part made of polyurethane-based optical material and a polarizing film integrally bonded to the optical part even using thin freestanding polarizing films, such as PVA films, achieving at the same time improved adhesion properties of the polarizing film to the optical material.

A multi-layer thin film is provided preferably for use with photochromic lenses, wherein the thin film comprises a plurality of layers, preferably including dielectric layers, selected and arranged so as to reflect less than about 6 percent of the UVA rays in a range of about 315 to 400 nm, more preferably about 350 to 380 nm. The thin film preferably has an activation value greater than 25%.

A polarized optical element is disclosed comprising an upper portion and a lower portion defined at opposite parts with respect to a median line passing through the geometric center of the optical element, wherein: a) in the upper portion and at a distance of at least 10 mm from the median line the factor of luminous transmittance is between 3% and 20%; b) in the lower portion and at a distance of at least 10 mm from the median line the factor of luminous transmittance is between 15% and 65%; c) the ratio of the luminous transmittance measured in the lower portion at a distance of at least 10 mm below the median line and the luminous transmittance measured in the upper portion at a distance of at least 10 mm above the median line is not lower than 1.5; d) the colors of the upper and lower portions of the optical element are such that: d1) the absolute value of the difference between the value of the colorimetric coordinate a* of the upper portion measured at a point located 10 mm above the median line and the value of the colorimetric coordinate a* of the lower portion measured at a point located 10 mm below the median line is comprised between 0 and 60, d2) the absolute value of the difference between the value of the colorimetric coordinate b* of the upper portion measured at a point located 10 mm above the median line and the value of the colorimetric coordinate b* of the lower portion measured at a point located 10 mm below the median line is comprised between 0 and 60, e) the degree of polarization of the optical element is uniform both along a vertical and along a horizontal direction and is equal to at least 45% as measured according to European Standard EN 1836.

Polarized optical element having differentiated transmittance properties for use in eye-protecting devices

An optical element is disclosed comprising at least one transparent eye-protecting portion comprising a plastic material, preferably having a hardness within a range of about 40 Shore A to about 77 Shore D, as measured according to ASTM Standard D2240, and an elongation at break within a range of about 200% to about 700%, as measured according to ASTM Standard D638.

Method and liquid composition for marking substrates made of plastics

An optical element is disclosed comprising an upper portion (9) and a lower portion (8) defined in opposite parts with respect to a median line (x--x) passing through the geometric center (C.sub.1, C.sub.2) of the optical element, wherein the factor of luminous transmittance is between 30% and 80% in the lower portion (8) and between 3% and 40% in the upper portion (9). Advantageously, furthermore, the curve of spectral transmittance as a function of the wavelength in the lower portion (8) and at a distance of at least 10 mm from the median line (x--x) is such as to show: a minimum in a wavelength range of from 495 to 510 nm, ii) an increase in spectral transmittance at wavelengths lower than 495 nm and higher than 510 nm, iii) a maximum at a wavelength lower than 440 nm, iv) a reduction in the spectral transmittance as the wavelength decreases starting from said maximum.

Optical element for use in eye-protecting devices

An improved method for manufacturing spectacle lenses and the like from diglycol allyl carbonate or equivalent plastic by first heating the plastic monomer in the liquid state and containing a polymerization initiator therefor in a planar mold until a degree of polymerization in the range of about 65-85% of completion has been achieved, then removing the partially polymerized material from the mold, subjecting the same to deflection to a curvature corresponding to the desired lens and heating the thus-deflected material until polymerization is complete. Preferably, the initial planar molding step is carried out with a layer or sheet of the material of sufficient size as to contain a plurality of individual lens elements, and after removal thereof from the mold, a plurality of individual lens elements is derived therefrom and such elements are separately subjected to deflection and further polymerization. Preferably, the amount of polymerization initiator exceeds the normally used amount. A post thermal treatment is advantageous to stabilize the lens elements from loss of the curvature imparted thereto.
