Aqueous membrane permeable by mass transport to a charged and uncharged species of interest, comprising a synthetic polymeric material and a surface active agent which is miscible with the synthetic polymer. The surface active agent is distributed throughout the membrane and is present in an amount such as to provide for the permeability of the membrane to the species of interest.

Membrane for chemical and biosensors

A membrane for use in a sensor having a detection arrangement. The membrane is of a cellulosic material incorporating a hydrophobic agent (e.g. isopropyl myristate) and is permeable by diffusion to an analyte species of interest to be detected directly or indirectly by the detection arrangement.

Membrane for a sensor

A sensor uses an immobilized affinity component capable of interacting with analyte species and being associated with a conducting polymer such that the interaction of the affinity component and the analyte induces change in the electrical properties of the polymer. An AC signal is applied to the polymer, and the induced change in impedance resulting from the interaction is measured. The impedance is measured at a frequency or frequencies corresponding to a peak or peaks in the relationship between frequency and impedance change for the polymer and the analyte. The measurement may be made by reference to the imaginary or real component of impedance. The polymer may be in the form of a layer bridging two electrodes between which the impedance is measured. The two electrodes may together define an interdigitated electrode assembly.

A method and apparatus for detecting ethanol content of a sample wherein a membrane barrier comprising unplasticized PVC is interposed between the sample and detecting means.

Analytical method

Sensor devices, and analytical methods using them, employing a detector protected from direct contact with samples being examined by a membrane made of a polyurethane modified with a non-ionic surfactant. The detector is preferably an electrode of conventional type (e.g. plantinum metal, optionally with pseudo, counter or reference electrodes) but especially an enzyme electrode. The surfactant may be incorporated into the polyurethane by admixture or by reacting chemically with the polyurethane, and is preferably a condensate of ethylene oxide with a compound containing a hydrophobic moiety&mdash;especially with a hydroxy-compound, e.g. an alkylated phenol, fatty alcohol or a sorbitan ester. Conveniently, the polyurethane membrane may contain up to 20 parts per 100 of polyurethane and be up to 10 microns thick, and formed by dip-coating an electrode. Measurements, using electrodes, may be made amperometrically.

Modified polyurethane membrane sensors and analytical methods

A sample analyzer incorporates a sensor unit for providing a desired analysis of a sample. The analyzer includes a first body portion having a sensor surface (of the sensor unit) to which a sample is applied for effecting the analysis, a second body portion which is openable and closable together with said first body portion, a chamber incorporating the sensor surface when the first and second body portions are in the closed position, at least one reservoir for holding a treatment liquid and is capable of communicating with the chamber and providing a supply of treatment liquid to the chamber when the body portions are closed.

Sample analyzer

Method and electrode assemblies for using or installing an electrode (especially enzyme electrode) in vivo, in which a protecting medium is introduced at the installation site to suppress adverse effects on the electrode's output. The medium is preferably an isotonic solution (e.g. saline) and/or a buffer solution and/or an anti-coagulant, and may be of increased viscosity (e.g. a gel, or hydrogel), and may be coated on the electrode assembly. The preferred electrode assembly is a needle within a trocar cannula, preferably with the needle tip set back to form a recess to contain gelled medium which can then be fed with liquid medium. The assembly can be made as a sterilized, sealed pack bearing calibration and/or other data relevant to its use, especially in machine-readable form.

Sensor devices and method of using same

Enzyme electrodes having the enzyme enclosed within liposomes supported on, or in a membrane and immobilized therein are provided. The liposomes may be made using lipids and conveniently by 'reverse phase evaporation'. The enzyme electrodes incorporate conventional electrode elements, e.g., THE Clark electrode pair (Platinum/Silver) and additional membranes or screens, and used particularly in amperometric measurements. The enzyme can be an oxidase and is useful for measurement, directly or indirectly, of low molecular weight species generated by enzymic action, and effective for study of biological fluids.

Electrolytic analytical methods

A sensor of the enzyme-electrode type containing a layer of porous material of restricted permeability between the enzyme and a sample to be analysed. The porous material has a percentage porosity not greater than 5% and preferably in the range 0.005% to 0.5%.
