Embodiments herein describe an optical receiver that demultiplexes a multi-wavelength optical signal into a plurality of optical signals with respective wavelengths. Stated differently, the various wavelengths in the received optical signal are separated into different optical signals with different wavelengths. In one embodiment, the optical receiver includes a plurality of optical filters that is aligned with a mirror to perform the demultiplexing function. The embodiments herein disclose optical receivers where the optical components performing the demultiplexing function using a ball lens aligned with optical filters.

Multi-channel optical receiver or transmitter with a ball lens

Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to an optical device for transferring light between a first and second waveguide. The optical device may generally include the first waveguide, a first support member and a base on which the first waveguide and first support member are disposed. The optical device may further include a second support member wherein the first support member is disposed between the second support member and the base. The second support member comprises at least one groove. The second waveguide may be disposed at least partially in the groove such that the second waveguide is between the first and second support members. The optical device may further include at least one lens disposed between the first waveguide and the second waveguide to transfer an optical signal between the first and second waveguides through the lens.

Optically coupling waveguides

A differential measurement design employing two nearly collinear optical beams provides surface plasmon polariton resonance (SPR) sensors and a corresponding method of increased dynamic range and signal to noise ratio. The differential measurement device and method based on wavelength interrogation, employs a single incident polarization state, and is combined with a 2-D nanohole array for operation at near-normal incidence, where this approach offers a decrease in the measurement time.

Differential detection for surface plasmon resonance sensor and method

The invention is directed to a method for etching a solid state material to create a surface relief pattern. A resist layer is formed on the surface of the solid state material. The photoresist layer is holographically patterned to form a patterned mask. The pattern is then transferred into the solid state material by a dry etching process. The invention is especially useful for forming optical nanostructures. In preferred embodiments, a direct write process, such as ebeam lithography, is used to define defects and functional elements, such as waveguides and cavities.

Holographically defined surface mask etching method and etched optical structures

A polarization compensated planar waveguide branch is disclosed having a planar optical trunk waveguide for transporting a linearly un-polarized optical signal having TE and TM modes. A planar optical branch waveguide, capable of supporting TE and TM modes is optically coupled to the trunk waveguide such that at least a portion of an optical signal propagating within the trunk waveguide will couple into the branch waveguide with an undesired imbalance, having stronger TM mode coupling than TE mode coupling for the at least the portion of the optical signal which couples into the branch waveguide from the trunk waveguide. A portion of said branch waveguide downstream from a region where coupling takes place between the trunk and branch waveguides or a waveguide portion optically coupled thereto, receives the at least a portion of the optical signal, and has at least a predetermined bend with a predetermined radius for compensating for the unwanted imbalance in the TM and TE mode caused by light optically coupling into the branch from the trunk waveguide.

Polarization compensated optical tap

A demultiplexer/multiplexer is disclosed wherein an arrayed waveguide grating having a reflector at an end includes selectable signal path blockers. The arrayed waveguide device has a common input/output port for launching radiation in the form of an input signal having n wavelengths therein and for receiving back via the reflector at the input/output port a selected channel of the input signal. In operation a multiplexed signal have n channels is launched therein and a selected channel is output for analysis or further processing.

Dynamic optical demultiplexer/multiplexer formed within a PLC

An apparatus for monitoring an input optical signal at a plurality of distinct optical frequencies is disclosed wherein a demultiplexing arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) having a plurality of M&#x3e;1 Vernier input ports is disposed between an optical switch and a photodiode array coupled to the output ports of the AWG. In operation, the optical switch sequentially provides the input optical signal into each of the Vernier ports, and signals detected by photodiodes are stored in a memory unit. The apparatus is capable of monitoring the input optical signal with a frequency step which is M times smaller than a frequency spacing between the AWG transmission bands, and obtain M frequency-resolved readings from each photodiode.
