Orthopaedic devices are disclosed. The devices include a part that is made of extracellular matrix material that has been hardened. One method of hardening the extracellular matrix is to comminute naturally occurring extracellular matrix and dry the comminuted material. The hardened extracellular matrix material can be machined to form a variety of orthopaedic devices.

Device from naturally occurring biologically derived materials

Methods and devices are provided for regenerating a meniscus. The devices comprise a layer of toughened naturally occurring extracellular matrix. The devices may, optionally, further comprise a biologic material to provide a framework for meniscus regeneration. The methods comprise the steps of removing a portion of a meniscus to provide a space, and inserting a device comprising a layer of toughened naturally occurring extracellular matrix into the space.

Meniscus regeneration device

A method of making an implantable scaffold for repairing damaged or diseased tissue includes the step of suspending pieces of an extracellular matrix material in a liquid. The extracellular matrix material and the liquid are formed into a mass. The liquid is subsequently driven off so as to form interstices in the mass. Porous implantable scaffolds fabricated by such a method are also disclosed.

Porous extracellular matrix scaffold and method

A cartilage repair device comprises a scaffold, for example a naturally occurring extracellular matrix material, and a biological lubricant. The biological lubricant is applied to the naturally occurring extracellular matrix material.

Cartilage repair and regeneration device

Unitary surgical devices () are disclosed. One group of the illustrated devices has a pair of biocompatible, bioresorbable anchors () connected to fixed lengths suture. The anchors () and fixed length of suture are connected to each other prior to surgery. Another group of unitary surgical devices has a pair of fixating mechanisms () connected to a base () prior to surgery. The second group of illustrated devices generally includes extracellular matrix material either as part of the base () or supported on the base (). The extracellular matrix material serves as tissue regenerating material. In the second group of unitary surgical devices, the fixating mechanisms illustrated generally comprise suture, anchors or pre-formed holes in the base. All of the illustrated unitary surgical devices are useful in repairing a damaged meniscus. The first group of unitary surgical devices can be used to approximate inner surfaces of a tear in the meniscus. The second group of devices can be used either as an insert to be placed between and approximated to the inner surfaces of the tear or as an insert to replace a void in the meniscus left after a meniscectomy.

Unitary surgical device and method

Bioprosthetic devices for soft tissue attachment, reinforcement, or construction are provided. The devices comprise a sheet of naturally occurring extracellular matrix and a sheet of synthetic mesh coupled to the naturally occurring extracellular matrix portion.

Reinforced small intestinal submucosa

An orthopaedic device for repairing and regenerating cartilage includes a plug configured to be positioned in a hole formed in the cartilage and an anchor configured to support the plug. One or both of the plug and the anchor may be formed from naturally occurring extracellular matrix such as small intestine submucosa. A method for repairing and regenerating cartilage is also disclosed.

Porous delivery scaffold and method

An apparatus for use in affixing material to a location under repair includes a material retention member and an anchor. The anchor is configured to be inserted into a cavity in bone tissue, the anchor having a first end and a second end. The anchor also includes one or more raised ribs. The material retention member extends radially from the first end of the anchor in a plurality of directions, the material retention member including at least one contact surface adapted to exert a retention force on material that is interposed between the material retention device and the bone tissue.

Soft tissue repair material fixation apparatus and method

A method of reconstructing a joint having two bones separated by cartilaginous material is provided. The method comprises the steps of removing a portion of the cartilaginous material to create a defect site, positioning an anatomically shaped reconstructive structure comprising multiple layers of submucosa and having a thickness of about 1 to about 12 millimeters adjacent to the defect site, and securing the reconstructive structure to the defect site. The method can further comprise the steps of positioning a barrier layer between the bleeding bone and the reconstructive structure, securing the barrier layer to the bleeding bone, and securing the reconstructive structure to the barrier layer.

Method of reconstructing a joint

A bioprosthetic device is provided for soft tissue attachment, reinforcement, and or reconstruction. The device comprises a naturally occurring extracellular matrix portion and a synthetic portion. In illustrated embodiments, the naturally occurring extracellular matrix portion comprises layers of small intestine submucosa, and the synthetic portion comprises one or more rows of fibers or mesh positioned between layers of the small intestine submucosa.
