A microwave cooking system comprising a thermally insulated holder for food bodies having a thermally reflective shield for reflecting thermal radiation from the food bodies to thereby reduce the loss of heat by radiation through the thermal insulation layer while providing for propagation of microwave energy into the food body through the thermal insulating portion of the food holder.

A microwave cooking utensil comprising a glass ceramic dish having a resistive film on the outside and a conductive layer covering substantially all of the inside to block the passage of microwave energy through the dish to the interior thereof. A conductive lid over the dish prevents the passage of microwave energy through the opening of the dish. During cooking, substantially all of the microwave energy is absorbed by the resistive film instead of the food so that searing temperatures are maintained.

A novel anode structure for electron discharge devices, for example, a crossed field oscillator of the magnetron type is fabricated by uniting nonthermally substantially similar cylindrical members each having a boundary wall member and plurality of vane members. The vane member edges are provided with alternate clearance or contacting mating notches to position an annular strap or straps in the complete anode assembly. Less expensive metal castings, such as aluminum, and other suitable vacuum materials, and such techniques as pressure welding and interference fits may be employed without expensive brazing procedures to result in a simplified less expensive anode structure. Different anode vane configurations are simply implemented, such as V-shapes, utilizing castings or similar structures which when joined together form the composite anode assembly.

A handle for a small appliance, utensil or other body such as a coffee maker, for example, and particularly designed to be used in a microwave environment, the handle being made entirely of material which will remain cool when subjected to microwave radiation and being constructed of a ring encircling the appliance body and a gripping member fixed to the ring by a rigid inseparable joint, and a compressible member between the ring and the body which allows the handle to be applied to bodies having variations in dimensional tolerances.

Apparatus for heating with microwave energy is disclosed comprising a plurality of spaced microwave elements in a flexible webbing adapted to fit the contour of any object to be cooked. The microwave elements, such as cups, have a height of substantially one-quarter of a wavelength. An intense fringing electric field pattern results with the electric field being 180.degree. out of phase in close proximity to the open ends of the elements. The material contacted by these ends will be suitably browned or seared. An impedance matching dielectric member may also be provided in contact with the apparatus.
