Medical devices, and in particular implantable medical devices, may be coated with any number of biocompatible materials. Therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may be mixed with the biocompatible materials and affixed to at least a portion of the medical device. These therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may also further reduce a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. In addition, these therapeutic drugs, agents and/or compounds may be utilized to promote healing, including the formation of blood clots. Also, the devices may be modified to promote endothelialization. Various materials and coating methodologies may be utilized to maintain the drugs, agents or compounds on the medical device until delivered and positioned. In addition, various polymer combinations may be utilized to control the elution rates of the therapeutic drugs, agents and/or compounds from the implantable medical devices.

A dip coating process is utilized to minimize waste and to customize coating thickness and drug loading directly at the clinical site just prior to therapeutic use on a patient. An aqueous latex polymeric emulsion is utilized to coat any medical device to a desired thickness by allowing for successive dipping and drying cycles at the clinical site. In addition, aqueous latex polymeric emulsions pose less of a chance of the bridging phenomenon associated with organic solvent based polymers.

The present invention includes biocompatible coatings and films for use on implantable medical devices and medical devices containing such coatings and films applied to a surface thereof, which coatings/films are present on the device in an amount effective to provide an inert surface to be in contact with body tissue of a mammal upon implantation of the device in the mammal, and contain a film-forming polyfluoro copolymer containing the polymerized residue of a moiety selected from the group consisting of vinylidenefluoride and tetrafluoroethylene copolymerized with a second moiety other than the first moiety, wherein the relative amounts of the polymerized residue of the first and second moieties are effective to provide the coating and films with properties effective for use in coating implantable med devices.

Coatings for medical devices

A stent is positioned on an undersized mandrel and the stent is coated with an excess of a polymer and drug solution. The stent is rotated to spin off the excess of the coating. The stent is then moved into a new, clean position on the mandrel. The process is repeated a few times, after which time the coating is already dry and non-sticky. This process forms a conforming coating. Various important polymer solution parameters include viscosity, solvent evaporation rate and several others. The actual type of coating polymer is not as important as how the surface of the stent is treated, according to the steps described herein.

Device and process for coating stents

At least a portion of a catheter system ( ) is provided with fullerene material ( ) for performing or facilitating a medical procedure. In the case of a balloon catheter, the outer surface of the balloon may have a coating of fullerenes ( ), which are preferably photosensitive or activated by light. A light source ( ) can be used to illuminate or other wise activate the fullerene material. The light source ( ) may be formed by one or more optical fibers extending through the shaft of the catheter, and into the balloon. Various arrangements of the catheter system are possible, whereby the light source may selectively emit light outward through the fullerene material, and associated portions of the catheter system, which may be translucent. When activated by light, the fullerene coating may preferably generate, and give off therapeutic oxygen radicals. These oxygen radicals may affect local cell function to prevent or reduce cell proliferation. This therapy may have many applications, including for example, limiting restenosis after angioplasty.

Catheter system having fullerenes and method

The preparation and use of medical devices are described. A thiol group agent is loaded onto a medical device such as a stent or a catheter. Preferably, the loading is accomplished onto a polymeric surface that had been activated by water vapor RF plasma treatment. The thiol group agent is structured to exhibit sulfhydryl groups. These sulfhydryl groups are available for interaction with NO carriers such as nitrovasodilators. This interaction can take place in situ at an in vivo location within a vascular system, for example, in which event the sulfhydryl groups would be delivered by the medical device while the NO carrier will be delivered by suitable pharmaceutical administration means. Alternatively, the NO carrier can be loaded onto the treated medical device surface at a suitable time prior to insertion of the medical device into the body, such as immediately before the initiation of a medical procedure such as stent delivery and implantation.

Polymeric surfaces of medical devices or components of medical devices are provided that have enhanced biocompatibility properties. The polymeric surface presents an anti-thrombogenic, fibrinolytic or thrombolytic interface with body fluids such as blood during implantation or medical procedures. The biocompatibility enhancing agent is secured to the polymeric substrate by a spacer molecule which is covalently bound to the polymeric substrate which had been subjected to radiofrequency plasma treatment with a water vapor medium.

Radiofrequency plasma treated polymeric surfaces having immobilized

Internal polymeric surfaces of medical devices are provided that have enhanced biocompatibility properties. The internal polymeric surface presents an anti-thrombogenic, fibrinolytic or thrombolytic interface with body fluids such as blood flowing through medical device tubing during implantation for medical procedures. The biocompatibility enhancing agent is secured to the polymeric substrate by a spacer molecule which is covalently bound to the internal polymeric surface which had been subjected to radiofrequency plasma treatment with a low pressure plasma medium of water vapor, oxygen or combination of water vapor and oxygen gas.

Radiofrequency plasma biocompatibility treatment of inside surfaces

A treatment for metallic surfaces and devices having metallic surfaces is described. A film of heptafluorobutylmethacrylate (HFBMA) is applied to a surface by radiofrequency (RF) plasma deposition and subsequently treated with a biologically active agent. A water vapor RF plasma treatment of the HFBMA coating provides reactive groups thereon which can covalently bond to the biologically active agent. Alternatively, a spacer group can be bonded to the activated HFBMA and the biologically active agent can then be bonded to the spacer group. Devices coated according to the invention possess enhanced biocompatibility and the HFBMA coatings are durable even under severe crimping and expansion conditions.
