An electrokinetic device is configured as a dynamic lens cover and/or filter for an imaging assembly, e.g., of a mobile device, to selectively allow electromagnetic radiation to pass through a lens of the imaging assembly when the dynamic lens cover is in a first operating state or to prevent electromagnetic radiation from reaching the lens of the imaging assembly when the dynamic lens cover is in a second operating state. The electrokinetic device includes transparent first and second substrates, and a compaction trench surrounding the lens of the imaging assembly. The compaction trench stores pigment when the dynamic lens cover is in the first operating state. In the second operating state pigment is dispersed within a carrier fluid between the first and second substrates.

Applications of an electrokinetic device for an imaging system

Embossing resins, methods of manufacturing such resins, and electrokinetic display system, which includes display cells containing such resins. The resins include a fluoropolymer in weight percentage 5%-60%, a difunctional diluent in weight percentage 0-30%, a monofunctional diluent in weight percentage 0-40%, a urethane diacrylate or functionalized nanoscale material, e.g., a functionalized urethane material, in weight percentage 5-50%, a photoinitiator in weight percentage 0.5-5%, and a surfactant in weight percentage less than 0.5%. The difunctional diluent may be Hexanediol Diacrylate, and the monofunctional diluent may be a monofunctional hydrocarbon. The resins are made by identifying a target index of refraction for a cured state thereof, and combining together, by weight percentage, the constituent components to produce the liquid state version of the embossing resin having a desired composite index of refraction.

A printhead device includes firing chambers, nozzles, and shipping fluid. The shipping fluid includes a shipping fluid density and a shipping fluid viscosity greater than a corresponding ink density and ink viscosity of an ink that will be ejected from the firing chambers and through the nozzles.

An ink composition includes a colorant, a co-solvent, and an acid chosen from oleic acid, linoleic acid, undecanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, tridecanoic acid, and combinations thereof. The ink composition further includes lithium and water. An anti-evaporative layer forms, during uncapped non-use, at an interface between air and the ink composition in an orifice of a nozzle, thereby reducing evaporation of the water from the ink composition.

Ink composition

An ink composition for inkjet printing is disclosed herein. The ink composition includes a self-dispersed carbon black pigment with alkali metal counter ions, polyurethane, and an aqueous carrier. The aqueous carrier includes water, at least one water-soluble organic solvent, and at least one surfactant. In one embodiment, the aqueous carrier further includes an additive having a polar head group and a C-Chydrocarbon tail.

In one aspect of the present system and method, a pigment-based ink includes an acidic pigment-based ink formulation, and a pigment load less than 5 weight percent, where an amphoteric dispersant maintains the pigment distributed in the acidic pigment-based ink formulation, wherein the amphoteric dispersant has an isoelectric point, and wherein the amphoteric dispersant has a higher isoelectric point than the pH of the acidic pigment-based ink formulation.

Ink-jet ink sets, pigment-based ink formulations, methods of printing, and methods of enhancing print quality, are disclosed. One exemplary ink-jet ink set, among others, includes a pigment-based ink formulation at a first pH, including: a pigment-based ink, and an amphoteric dispersant having an isoelectric point; and a second ink formulation at a second pH, wherein the first pH and the second pH are each selected from an acidic pH and a basic pH, wherein the first pH and the second pH are not the same, and wherein the amphoteric dispersant has a higher isoelectric point than the first pH when the dispersant is acidic, and a lower isoelectric point than the first pH when the dispersant is basic.

Amphoteric pigment dispersion containing ink formulations, methods of using ink formulations, and systems using ink formulations

The present invention is drawn to a coated substrate for ink-jet ink printing comprising a substrate, having coated thereon, a porous coating, wherein the porous coating comprises silica covalently attached to a chelating agent, an ultraviolet blocker, and/or a hindered amine light stabilizer. In one embodiment, the chelating agent, ultraviolet blocker, and/or hindered amine light stabilizer can be substantially homogenously distributed on the silica.

Ink-jet media porous coatings with chemically attached active ligands

Silica-based, chemically-bonded porous coatings, synthesized via the reaction of organo silanes with silica, are used as coatings for inkjet image printing. Silica is used as the base material in all cases, due to its favorable chemical properties of the surface, and the favorable pore structure. The silane-silica reaction product substantially retains the original pore structure of the pre-reacted silica. The disclosed embodiments solve the problems in the prior art in that any catalytic activity of the silica surface towards image fade is eliminated by the chemical modification of silica. This improves the image fade and humid fastness properties of the coating.

Chemically-bonded porous coatings that enhance humid fastness and fade fastness performance of ink jet images

Systems and methods for producing permanent ink-jet images are provided. In one embodiment, a system includes a media substrate coated with a porous media coating, wherein the porous media coating having inorganic porous particulates, and wherein at least a portion of the inorganic porous particulates have a first reactive group covalently attached thereto. The system further includes an ink-jet ink containing a dye, wherein the dye includes a second reactive group, and wherein the first reactive group and the second reactive group are configured to react with one another upon contact to form a covalent bond. In an alternative embodiment, a method of producing permanent ink-jet images can includes the steps of covalently bonding a first reactive group to an inorganic porous particulate; coating the inorganic porous particulate onto a media substrate to form a coated media substrate; ink-jetting a dye-containing ink-jet ink composition onto the coated media substrate, wherein the dye includes a second reactive group. The first reactive group and the second reactive group, upon contact, can interact to form a covalent bond.

Permanent fixation of dyes to surface-modified inorganic particulate-coated media

Ceramic pigment-based, chemically-modified porous coatings can be used for enhancing image permanence of ink-jet image printing. Specifically, a porous coated media sheet, comprising a media substrate, having a porous coating coated thereon comprising a modified ceramic pigment including a fixer group and a stabilizer group, each covalently attached to the ceramic pigment is disclosed. Additionally, a method and system for preparing permanent ink-jet images is also provided.
