The present invention relates to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method, in particular to a MRI method enabling early detection of myocardial ischemia and to compounds for use as MR contrast agents in the method.

The invention relates to a method of generating an image of an animate human or non-human animal body or part thereof. The method comprises administering to said body a physiologically tolerable contrast agent comprising a radiation absorbing component and/or a pressure inducing component, exposing said body to radiation, detecting pressure waves generated in said body by said radiation and generating an optoacoustic image therefrom of at least a part of said body containing the administered contrast agent.

There is provided a contrast medium composition for magnetic resonance imaging comprising a physiologically tolerable manganese compound, a physiologically tolerable reducing compound containing an .alpha.-hydroxy ketone group, or salt thereof and a physiologically tolerable carrier or excipient, having a manganese concentration of at least 0.3 mM or being in a dosage unit form containing at least 300 .mu.mol manganese.
