Systems, methods and a cooling module are described. The cooling module is configured to directly cool the plurality of battery cell tabs. The cooling module includes a generally prismatic isolation sheet contacting the battery cell tabs along a common plane and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger includes a metallic portion defining an open cavity and a lightweight portion joined to the metallic portion to define a unitary flow assembly. The metallic portion includes an outer planar surface engaging the second planar surface. The lightweight portion is formed from a thermally conductive plastic material and includes baffles integrally formed with and extending therefrom. The plurality of baffles engage an interior surface of the metallic portion to thereby define a serpentine path for the cooling fluid.

Battery-cell tab direct cooling using a multi-material cooling module

A cell-mounted application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) system for a vehicle includes a battery pack having multiple individual battery cells. An individual cell-mounted application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is in communication with each of the individual battery cells, with the ASIC drawing power for operation directly from the individual battery cell. A battery control unit is in communication with the ASIC. A central electronics control unit is in communication with the ASIC. The ASIC communicates wirelessly with the battery control unit and the central electronics control unit.

Cell-mounted application specific integrated circuits for battery sensing

Lithium battery cells, and battery packs comprising the same, include an electrolyte, and an anode and a cathode, each of which include a current collector having a length, the length defining a first end and a second end, a width, a host or active material disposed on the current collector between the first end and the second end, a first tab extending from the first end, a second tab extending from the second end, a first electron obstruction extending lengthwise inward from the first end, and optionally a second electron obstruction extending lengthwise inward from the second end. Electron obstructions comprises an area in which electron flow is precluded or only minimally facilitated. A plurality of cells can be stacked in a planar configuration, and a plurality of anode and cathode tabs can be connected via respective busbars. The battery cell can be a power source for an electric/hybrid vehicle.

Integrated passive cooling system and method

A hybrid powertrain system includes a method for managing electrical charging of a DC power source, which includes determining an initial charge-sustaining SOC setpoint and an initial charge-termination SOC setpoint. The DC power source is dynamically monitored. An adjustment to a charge-sustaining SOC setpoint is determined based upon the ambient temperature, the device temperature and the SOC of the DC power source, and an updated charge-sustaining SOC setpoint is determined based upon the adjustment to the charge-sustaining SOC setpoint and the initial charge-sustaining SOC setpoint. An electric energy equalization factor &#x3b1; is determined, and an updated charge termination SOC setpoint can be determined based upon the electric energy equalization factor &#x3b1;, the updated charge-sustaining SOC setpoint and the initial charge-sustaining SOC setpoint. Charging of the DC power source is controlled based upon the updated charge-termination SOC setpoint.

Method and apparatus for controlling a hybrid powertrain system

Disclosed are joint active thermal management (ATM) systems for electric-drive vehicles, control logic for operating such ATM systems, and electric-drive vehicles equipped with a joint ATM system for heating/cooling the powertrain's drive unit (DU) section, power electronics (PE) section, and rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) section. A disclosed active thermal management system includes a first coolant loop with fluid conduits fluidly connecting a first electronic heat exchanger and a first pump with the DU and PE sections. The ATM system also includes a second coolant loop with fluid conduits fluidly connecting a second electronic heat exchanger and a second pump with the RESS section. A coolant-to-coolant heat exchanger, which is fluidly connected to the first and second coolant loops, is operable to selectively transfer heat between the coolant fluid circulating in the first set of fluid conduits and the coolant fluid circulating in the second set of fluid conduits.

Joint active thermal management system and control logic for hybrid and electric vehicles

A cooling system for a battery is provided which includes a first tube, a second tube and a middle section which may be formed from an electrically insulating yet thermally conductive material. The first tube and the second tube may each be adapted to transfer coolant from a first end to a second end. The middle section integral may be the first tube on the first side of the middle section and integral to the second tube on the second side of the middle section. The first tube, the second tube and the middle section may be operatively configured to draw thermal energy away from at least one bus bar and corresponding cell tabs for a battery.

System and methods for estimating a state if a fuse are presented. In some embodiments, the disclosed systems and methods may be utilized in connection with estimating a state of a fuse associated with a manual service disconnect associated with an energy storage system included in a vehicle. Consistent with embodiments disclosed herein, a current event counting-based method utilizing one or more weighted time data buckets associated with various current levels may be used in connection with estimating MSD fuse life. In some embodiments, a MSD fuse end-of-service life signal may be triggered when a total time associated in the weighted time data buckets exceed a threshold value.

Manual service disconnect fuse state determination systems and methods

A battery cell includes a pouch, an electrolyte material, positive and negative electrodes, and one or more heat conducting members. The pouch has an inner surface defining an internal volume, within which is contained the electrolyte material. The electrodes form current collectors that are positioned within the internal volume of the pouch. The electrode terminals are connected to a respective one of the positive and negative electrodes. Each heat conducting member is in thermal communication with a respective electrode terminal fully within the internal volume of the pouch, and extends between the electrodes and the inner surface of the pouch. The heat conducting members form a parallel heat transfer path within the battery cell. A battery pack includes a housing containing multiple such battery cells.

A battery module is provided. The battery module includes a first battery cell; a heat transfer plate contacting the first battery cell and defining a perimeter, the heat transfer plate having a first thickness; a heat transfer fin extending from the perimeter of the heat transfer plate, the heat transfer fin having a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness; and a fluid conduit coupled to the heat transfer fin, whereby, during operation, heat is transferred from the first battery cell, to the heat transfer layer, to the heat transfer fin, and to the fluid conduit.

Battery modules and assemblies

A quiescent zone fluid filter. A reservoir communicates via upstream and downstream communication ports with a fluid flow tube. At the upstream communication port, liquid flowing in the fluid flow tube enters a quiescent zone of the reservoir, whereupon particles therein descend. The liquid then rejoins the fluid flow tube at the downstream communication port free of particles therein. The quiescent zone fluid filter is advantageously implemented within a fluid flow control valve, as for example at the valve barrel of a barrel valve.

An optimized fluid valve port has the following features: 1) the seal is preferably a standard O-ring seated in a rectilinear seal channel of one of a first or second valve body, 2) the unsupported span of the O-ring during valve port crossing is limited to a length of less than approximately three O-ring diameters, the support being provided by a web disposed between port openings; and 3), within the area of the O-ring, the fluid flow area of the fluid valve port is maximized.

A prismatic repeating frame assembly for a battery pack includes a main body and a hollow compression limiter. The main body is formed from a first polymer. The main body has an aperture formed therein. The hollow compression limiter is formed from a second polymer. The compression limiter is disposed in the aperture of the main body and permits a compression rod to be disposed therethrough. The second polymer is configured to withstand forces during an assembly of the battery pack and frequency inputs during an operation of the battery pack.

One or more valves may be employed in a pressure relief vent of a vehicle. The valves may have asymmetrical closing characteristics of differing pressuring inducing closing characteristics or both in order to reduce the peak noise generated as the valves are closing.

A blower motor assembly for use in a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system of a vehicle and a method of diverting water are disclosed. The blower motor assembly may include a motor housing, configured to surround internal components of the blower motor assembly, and including a cooling channel/air intake opening. The blower motor assembly may also include a motor support flange extending radially outward from the motor housing and having an upward facing surface, and at least one water diversion vane extending upward from the upward facing surface and extending radially outward in an arcuate shape to divert water off of the flange.
