A two degree-of-freedom brushless DC motor includes a stator, a rotor, a plurality of distributed stator windings, and a stator voice coil winding. The stator includes an inner stator structure and a plurality of arc-shaped stator poles. The inner stator structure includes a main body and a plurality of spokes that are spaced apart from each other to define a plurality of stator slots. Each arc-shaped stator pole is connected to a different one of the spokes. The rotor is spaced apart from the stator, includes a plurality of magnets, and is configured to rotate about a plurality of perpendicular axes. The distributed stator windings are wound around the plurality of spokes and extend through the stator slots. The stator voice coil winding is wound around the outer surfaces of the arc-shaped stator poles. The arc-shape and spacing of the stator poles define the stator as being spherically shaped.

Two degree-of-freedom spherical brushless DC motor

An electromagnetic machine includes a spherical stator, an armature, a first coil, and a second coil. The spherical stator has an outer surface, and the outer surface has a plurality of spaced-apart protuberances formed thereon. Each protuberance extends radially from, and is disposed normal to, the outer surface. The armature is disposed adjacent to the spherical stator and includes a magnet that emanates a magnetic field. The magnet has at least one of its magnetic poles facing the spherical stator. The first coil is wound around at least a portion of the spherical stator, and is disposed between the plurality of spaced-apart protuberances and along latitudinal lines of the spherical stator. The second coil is wound around at least a portion of the spherical stator, and is disposed between the plurality of spaced-apart protuberances and along longitudinal lines of the spherical stator.

An active human-machine interface feedback system includes a user interface, a pitch angle sensor, a roll angle sensor, a spherical motor, and a control circuit. The user interface adapted to receive user input and is configured, upon receipt of the user input, to move, about one or both of a pitch axis and a roll axis, to a user interface position. The pitch angle sensor is configured to sense the pitch angle component of the user interface position. The roll angle sensor is configured to sense the roll angle component of the user interface position. The spherical motor is coupled to the user interface and is symmetrically disposed about the origin. The control circuit determines a polar angle (&#x3b8;) of the user interface relative to the origin, determine an azimuthal angle (&#x3c6;) of the user interface relative to the origin, and supply current to the first, second, and third coils.

An assembly includes a first structure, a first bearing assembly, and a second structure. The first structure has a first predetermined stiffness, and the first bearing assembly is mounted on the first structure. The second structure, which has a second predetermined stiffness, is mounted on the first bearing assembly, whereby relative motion about a first rotational axis is allowed between the first and second structure. At least one of the first structure and the second structure distort when a force is supplied thereto along the first rotational axis, and the distortion of at least one of the first structure and the second structure imparts a first preload force on the first bearing assembly.

A multi-axis gimbal assembly includes a spherical armature, a first coil, a second coil, a third coil, a bracket, a stator, and a motor. The spherical armature has first, second, and third perpendicularly disposed axes of symmetry. The first coil is wound about the first axis of symmetry, the second coil is wound about the second axis of symmetry, and the third coil is wound about the third axis of symmetry. The bracket is rotationally coupled to the spherical armature to allow relative rotation between the spherical armature and bracket around only the first axis of symmetry. The stator is rotationally coupled to the bracket to allow relative rotation between the stator and bracket around only the second axis of symmetry. The motor is coupled to the stator and is configured to simultaneously rotate the stator, the bracket, and the spherical armature around the third axis of symmetry.

A multi-degree-of-freedom electromagnetic machine that may be operated as a motor, a generator, or a motor-generator, includes a first structure and a second structure. The first structure comprises a first conductor, a second conductor, and a third conductor, each of which follows a different trajectory. The first, second, and third conductors together form a general shape of a surface. The second structure is disposed adjacent to the first structure and includes a magnet that emanates a magnetic field. The magnet has at least one of its magnetic poles facing the surface. A Lorentz force affects relative movement between the first structure and the second structure when the magnetic field that emanates from the at least one magnetic pole interacts with electrical currents within any of the electrical conductors.

A multi-degree-of-freedom electromagnetic machine includes a stator, an armature, and a control. The stator includes a first stator conductor, a second stator conductor, and a third stator conductor. The armature is disposed adjacent to, and is movable relative to, the stator. The armature includes an armature conductor and a plurality of magnets, where each magnet has at least one of its magnetic poles facing the surface. The control is coupled to the first, second, and third stator conductors, and is configured to supply direct current (DC) to the first, second, and third stator conductors, and to selectively amplitude modulate the DC supplied to one or more of the first, second, and third stator conductors, to thereby electromagnetically couple the armature conductor to the one or more first, second, and third stator conductors.

A hydrostatic automatic flight servo system is provided. The automatic flight servo system includes a manifold that defines a first fluid chamber, and a hydraulic fluid is received in the first fluid chamber. The first fluid chamber includes a first bellows and a second bellows. The automatic flight servo system includes a stick received at least partially within the manifold and pivotally coupled to the manifold. The stick includes a control arm fixedly coupled to the first bellows, and the stick is to receive an input. The automatic flight servo system includes a flight output system pivotally coupled to the manifold. The flight output system includes a second control arm received at least partially within the manifold and coupled to the second bellows such that the pivotal movement of the stick pivots the flight output system relative to the manifold.

The second structure is disposed adjacent to the first structure and includes a plurality of magnets. The control is configured to controllably supply alternating current (AC) to the first and second spin conductors and direct current (DC) to the tilt conductor, wherein the first structure continuously rotates about the spin axis in response to the AC being supplied to the first and second spin conductors, and rotates about the tilt axis to a tilt position in response to the DC being supplied to the tilt conductor.

A multi-degree-of-freedom electromagnetic machine includes a stator, an armature, and a control. The stator includes a first, second, and third stator conductors that follow first, second, and third trajectories that are all different, and that together form a general shape of a surface. The armature is disposed adjacent to, and is movable relative to, the stator, and includes a plurality of spaced-apart armature coils. Each armature coil is configured, upon being electrically energized, to generate a magnetic field. The control is coupled to the first, second, and third stator conductors, and to the armature coils and is configured to: (i) supply DC to the stator conductors, and (ii) supply DC to one or more of the armature coils, to thereby generate one or more magnetic fields that interact with the stator conductors and vary an orientation of the one or more magnetic fields relative to the stator conductors.

A multi-degree of freedom spherical actuator includes a spherical stator, a first coil, a second coil, an armature, and a plurality of magnets. The spherical stator has a first axis of symmetry, a second axis of symmetry, and a third axis of symmetry. The first, second, and third axes of symmetry are disposed perpendicular to each other. The first coil is wound on the spherical stator about the first axis of symmetry, and the second coil is wound on the spherical stator about the second axis of symmetry. The armature is spaced apart from, and surrounds at least a portion of, the spherical stator. The armature has an inner surface and is movable relative to the spherical stator. The magnets are coupled to, and extend from, the inner surface of the armature, and each of the magnets is spaced apart from the spherical stator.

A user input device for a vehicular electrical system is provided. The user input device includes a handle sized and shaped to be gripped by a human hand and a gimbal assembly within the handle. The gimbal assembly includes a first gimbal component, a second gimbal component coupled to the first gimbal component such that the second gimbal component is rotatable relative to the first gimbal component about a first axis, and a third gimbal component coupled to the second gimbal component such that the third gimbal component is rotatable relative to the second gimbal component about a second axis.

The control system includes a pressurized fluid source configured to provide a pressurized fluid, a valve in fluid communication with the pressurized fluid source, and a voice coil actuator comprising a magnet and a conductive coil oriented relative to the magnet such that when current flows through the coil, the coil moves relative to the magnet. The voice coil actuator is coupled to the valve such that the relative movement of the coil causes an adjustment in a flow rate of the pressurized fluid through the valve.
