The present invention to provide a 'smart cable system' for high density metallic cross connect systems. In particular, this invention relates to the physical structure of cables and associated hardware needed to form the 'smart cable system' for interconnecting cards in shelves and racks of high density metallic cross connect switching systems. This invention provides the cable installer the ability to connect cables to cards with minimal errors by using visual indicators. The visual indicators guide the cable installer such that he/she can properly install the cables into the appropriate connectors. The present invention also provides a means for detecting when and where the cables are connected within the cross connect system.

Smart cable for design of high density metallic cross connect systems

The present invention discloses a physical shelf architecture for high density metallic cross connect systems. The present invention is intended to overcome the problems associated with the physical interconnections of metallic paths in cross connect switching systems. The physical architecture of the present invention effectively performs physical interconnections required by high density metallic cross connect systems. The physical architecture enables for a scalable design and structure of racks and shelves. In particular, inter-connect levels can be performed with devices-to-devices, boards-to-boards, shelves-to-shelves, and racks-to-racks.

Physical architecture for design of high density metallic cross connect systems

The present invention discloses systems and methods for protecting electronic devices (switching and non-switching) such as micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices and solid state relays due to lightning exposure or electrical power surges. An over voltage protector and an over current protector are used to limit the exposure of high voltages and currents to the MEMS devices and solid-state relays. A relay or equivalent device is energized when a high current is sensed in the loop, which relay is used to protect the MEMS devices and solid state relays from damage. The relay can be controlled via software/hardware and works in conjunction with other components/devices in the overall systems. In this manner, any number of MEMS devices or solid state relays can be protected.

Systems and methods for protecting vulnerable micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and electronic relay devices

The invention described herein relates to a splitter bypass system and method for monitoring, testing and maintaining copper loops and lines. Switching devices are implemented in the present invention to bypass a low pass filter and/or a high pass filter in the splitter, thereby actuating bypass functions to bypass a splitter or portions thereof for enabling pure metallic access to the loop, digital equipment, voice equipment, and/or test equipment. The splitter bypass function can be used with a conventional splitter in the current voice and digital system. The splitter bypass operation includes selecting a copper loop or portions thereof for monitoring, testing and maintenance.

Splitter bypass architecture for testing multiple ports

The present invention is directed to a remotely actuated splitter bypass function (RASB) working in conjunction with a test head at the central office for testing and maintaining copper loops in the digital subscriber line environment. The RASB allows a competitive local exchange carrier to test and maintain the xDSL portion of the copper loop with minimal interference and disturbance to/from the plain old telephone system (POTS) service by bypassing the central office splitter. The splitter bypass operation includes the steps of selecting a copper loop pair for testing, actuating a first relay for monitor mode, actuating a second relay for bypass mode, testing the selected copper loop, and resetting the first and second relays back to normal mode. By applying positive and negative voltages from the tip and ring with respect to ground, various relays can be set (actuated) and reset to provide multiple modes of operations. In this manner, relays can be designed to respond in certain voltage levels and polarities.

A stackable data cell switch architecture includes a plurality of switch modules coupled in series and forming a bidirectional data transmission loop. Each switch module includes a data cell switch such as an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch, a first transceiver coupled to the data cell switch for receiving data cells from and transmitting data cells to an adjacent switch module in a first transmission direction, and a second transceiver coupled to the data cell switch for receiving data cells from and transmitting data cells to an adjacent switch module in a second transmission direction.

An ingress processor (16) includes an ingress controller (34) that controls the flow of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells placed in the ingress cell memory (32) by a cell loader (30). The ingress controller (34) links together ATM cells within the ingress cell memory (32) that correspond to a particular packet. The ingress controller (34) sends the beginning of message cell (BOM) to a route cell buffer (42) for processing by an ingress router (44). The ingress processor (34) sends the setup cell, the BOM cell, a transmit agent (48) through a transmit agent cell buffer (46) for transmission out of the ingress processor (16). The transmit agent (48) transmits all subsequent cells of the packet. Routing information for the packet is also stored in a VCI table (50) for use by the transmit agent (48) such that further route determinations for subsequent cells within a packet need not be determined by the ingress router (44).

Method and apparatus for route processing asynchronous transfer mode

An apparatus for generating route information for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell processing includes a route agent (64) that transmits a route request cell in response to a determination that route information for a particular ATM cell is not found within a route cache (62). A route processor (34) receives the route request cell from the route agent (64) and performs a route lookup operation within a set of routing tables (32). A master processor (30) builds and maintains the routing tables (32) in response to network and switch topologies received from and generated by an administration module (14). The route processor (34) obtains route information, such as destination card and port number, from the routing tables (32) and generates a route response cell containing the appropriate route information. The route agent (64) receives the route response cell from the route process (34) and updates the route cache (62) as determined by a least recently used manager (65). Processing continues on the ATM cell using the newly generated route information and remaining ATM cells within a packet are processed with the newly generated route information in the route cache (62) without any further routing generation.

Method and apparatus for generating route information for asynchronous

Call information is transmitted between broadband switching modules (12) and a broadband services switch (10). Each broadband switching module (12) receives call information from outside the broadband services switch (10) and translates the information into asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells. Each broadband switching module (12) also generates a route setup cell and a route teardown cell in order to establish and release a connection path to another broadband switching module (12), respectively. The broadband switching module (12) sends the route setup cell, that includes a virtual circuit identifier identifying the connection path for the calling information ATM cells, along a dedicated VCI to an intermediary broadband switching module (12). The sending broadband switching module (12) then transmits the payload ATM cells containing the calling information immediately after transmitting the route setup cell and before receiving an indication that a connection path has been established. The payload ATM cells are transmitted along a payload VCI determined by the broadband switching module (12) which was placed within the route setup cell.
