The present invention relates to a composition comprising a) an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles comprising structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer or a salt thereof; and b) an aminosilane. The composition is effective for improving block resistance in such pigmented coating formulations.

An aqueous coating composition including a) a composite particle including an opacifying pigment particle such as, for example, TiO2 and, disposed thereon, a plurality of particles of a first polymer, the first polymer being a select P-acid containing emulsion polymer and b) from 7% to 25% by weight, based on the total weight of polymer in the aqueous coating composition, of a select second polymer is provided. The present invention relates to a stable aqueous dispersion of acrylic based polymer particles with a first and a second polymeric domain, wherein the first polymeric domain is film-forming at room temperature and the second polymeric domain has a Tof not less than 35&#xb0; C., and wherein both polymeric domains include structural units of a ureido monomer. The composition of the present invention addresses a need in the art by providing a composition that is useful as a binder with improved alkyd adhesion properties.

Ureido-functionalized aqueous polymeric dispersion

The present invention provides an aqueous opaque coating formulation comprising (A) and aqueous solvent; (B) an inorganic material; and (C) a chelating polymer which comprises units derived from one or more aminocarboxylate compounds or their salts, one or more other polymerizable monomers, one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers and, optionally, one or more crosslinking monomers. For example, the aminocarboxylate compounds or their salts may be one or more of iminodiacetic acid (IDA), iminodisuccinic acid (IDS), ethylenediamine triacetic acid (ED3A) and ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), or their salts. Suitable polymerizable monomers may be one or more of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), allyl glycidyl ether (AGE), vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC), allyl bromide, and their derivatives. The inorganic material may be a pigment, such as titanium dioxide (TiO) or cadmium sulfide (CdS), or an extender or filler, such as talc (MgSiO(OH)), calcium carbonate (CaCO) or mica, or even combinations thereof.

Coating compositions having chelant functionality

The present invention relates to a soluble shell polymer composition comprising an alkali soluble emulsion polymer shell and an alkali insoluble emulsion polymer core, which composition is stabilized by a surfactant of the formula R&#x2014;(OCHCH)OSOM, where R is a linear, branched, or cyclic C-Calkyl or C-Caralkyl group and Mis a counterion. The invention further relates to a method of preparing the composition and its use as a binder in coatings formulations. Formulations prepared with the soluble shell polymer composition have excellent freeze-thaw profiles and hiding.

The present invention provides one component aqueous compositions comprising (i) from 0.01 to 7 wt. %, based on the total weight of solids in the composition, of anion exchange resin beads having a weight average particle size of from 0.1 to 20 &#x3bc;m a low crosslinker content, the anion exchange resin copolymer beads being chosen from gelular beads, beads having a dual morphology, and mixtures thereof, (ii) an emulsion copolymer having a copolymerization residue of one or more phosphorus acid monomer, and having an anionic surfactant or its polymerization residue and a reductant or its polymerization residue and, (iii) at least one phosphorous containing surfactant in the amount of from 0.1 to 5 wt. %, based on the weight of emulsion copolymer solids. The compositions find use as coating binders and either pigmented or unpigmented paints and enable the provision of a single coat primer plus topcoat with excellent stain blocking.

Aqueous compositions comprising ion exchange resins that deliver paint and primer properties in a coating

The present invention provides one component aqueous compositions comprising (i) a cationic stain blocking polymer chosen from (a) 0.01 to 7 wt. % of anion exchange resin copolymer gelular or dual morphology beads that have a weight average particle size of from 0.1 to 20 &#x3bc;m and a low copolymerized crosslinker content of from 0.5 to 2.0 wt. %, (b) from 1 to 30 wt. % a crosslinked cationic addition polymer and (c) mixtures thereof, (ii) one or more emulsion copolymer having a copolymerized residue of at least one phosphorus acid monomer, and (iii) a stabilizer of from 0.1 to 2 wt. % of an inorganic phosphorus containing dispersant, and from 0.2 to 5.0 wt. % of a mixture of a nonionic surfactant and an anionic surfactant, both wt. % s based on the total weight of emulsion copolymer solids. The compositions provide stabilized binders for in a single coat primer plus topcoat coatings and paints.
