A method of operating a communication network includes training a neural network and implementing the neural network to determine link availability. Training the neural network includes receiving first images and signal visibility data for first locations for one or more first nodes in the communication network, generating training data based on the first images and the signal visibility data, and training the neural network using the training data to output an attenuation category related to attenuation rate of a link based on a training image and a timestamp for the training image. Implementing the neural network includes receiving second images for second locations for one or more second nodes in the communication network, determining link availability based on the second images and outputs from the neural network, and operating the communication network based on the link availability.

Determining attenuation rate using imagery

A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for scheduling, load balancing and/or pilot assignment in MIMD cellular deployments (e.g., reciprority-based MIMO cellular deployments). In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, by the central controller from at least one AP, for at least one user terminal, a size of a user set and user rate information indicative of a rate that can be provided to the user terminal when served in a group of one or more user terminals; and determining, by the central controller, based on user rate information and the user set size, an allocation of AP resources among the user terminals for the at least one AP.

Method and apparatus for scheduling, load balancing, and pilot-assignments in reciprocity-based MIMO cellular deployments

A method and apparatus for data transmission in a cellular system are disclosed herein In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving transmissions of uplink pilot signals made in each slot, by a number of UEs, over the radio resource elements in slots that are allocated for uplink pilot transmission, wherein the number of UEs in the vicinity of at least one base station exceeds the number of radio resource elements that have been allocated for uplink pilot transmission in the slot; estimating large-scale radio-channel propagation strengths of a plurality of nearby UEs to a base station; estimating radio-propagation channel coefficients between each base-station antenna and each UE, in a subset of UEs in the plurality of nearby UEs that have large-scale radio-channel propagation strengths to the base station that are stronger than those UEs in the plurality of nearby UEs not part of the subset; and transmitting to in-cell UEs via multi-user beamforming, including suppressing interference to one or more nearby out-of-cell UEs that are part of the plurality of nearby UEs.

Method and apparatus for extracting large-scale features in propagation channels via non-orthogonal pilot signal designs

A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for uplink pilot reuse and user-proximity detection in wireless networks. In one embodiment, a wireless system is disclosed for use in a wireless network having a plurality of user terminals (UTs), where at least two UTs of the plurality of UTs have pre-assigned user uplink pilot codes and are allocated common pilot resources over at least two concurrent slots, the system comprising a UT-proximity detection processor to determine which UT channels the UT-proximity detection processor can resolve among a group of UTs transmitting pilots in identical pilot resources, the UT-proximity detection processor operable to resolve a UT channel of a UT by determining the UT is in proximity of the system and no other UT in the group of UTs transmitting pilots that has transmitted a pilot on the identical pilot resources is in proximity of the system.

Uplink pilot reuse and user-proximity detection in wireless networks

A method and apparatus are disclosed herein for user/base station signaling and load balancing across a wireless network. In one embodiment, the method comprises broadcasting, by a first base station in the wireless network, information indicative of the load of the first base station; receiving an association request from the user terminal for association with the first base station in response to the user terminal predicting a net throughput from the first base station, based on the information indicative of the load, being greater than net throughput from a second base station to which the user terminal is currently associated; and determining whether to accept the association request while performing an association process for selectively allowing only a fraction of requests from user terminals to associated with the base station.

Method and apparatus for user/base-station signaling and association achieving load balancing across wireless multi-band heterogeneous networks

A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for resource allocation in a wireless communication system are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises allocating portions of the resources available to a subset of base stations of the plurality of base stations to serve a subset of UTs from clusters of base stations with cluster sizes including at least one with two or more base stations, where each of the portions of resources are allocated to serve one UT via a user-dependent cluster of base stations; and scheduling UT transmissions over the subset of base stations and scheduling slots, wherein within each of the scheduling slots one or more user terminals are scheduled for transmission, each by its user-dependent cluster of base stations.

Method and apparatus for resource allocation and for scheduling cellular and coordinated multipoint transmissions in heterogeneous wireless networks

A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for internal relative transceiver calibration. In one embodiment, the method comprises generating a plurality of processed observations corresponding to pilots transmitted by transceiver units in the entity and observations of the pilots by transceiver units in the entity, each processed observation being indicative of a combined response of a pilot transmitted by transmitter hardware of one transceiver unit at the entity and an observation of the pilot by receiver hardware of another transceiver unit at the entity; grouping the plurality of processed observations into one or more observation pairs, where each observation pair of the one or more observation pairs comprises: a first observation indicative of a combined response between transmitter hardware of a first transceiver unit and receiver hardware of a second transceiver unit in the entity, and a second observation indicative of a combined response between transmitter hardware of the second transceiver unit and receiver hardware of the first transceiver unit in the entity; and calculating, based on at least one of observation pairs, relative calibration values, where each relative calibration value is associated with a transceiver of each transceiver unit and is relative with respect to a transceiver of a reference unit at the entity.

Method and apparatus for internal relative transceiver calibration

A method and apparatus for load balancing in a wireless network is described. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, by at least one of the one or more controllers, from at least one of the one or more base stations, information indicative of a rate that can be provided by the at least one base station to at least one client terminal by the at least one base station when serving a group of one or more client terminals, the at least one client terminal being associated to the at least one controller; receiving, by the at least one of the one or more controllers, from the at least one of the one or more base stations, information indicative of the transmission resources provided by the at least one base station for resource allocation among the at least one client terminal by the at least one controller; and determining, by the at least one controller, based on the information indicative of the rate and the information indicative of transmission resources, information indicative of an allocation of base station transmission resources for at least one client terminal from the at least one base station.

Method and apparatus for scalable load balancing across wireless heterogeneous MIMO networks

A source channel encoder, source channel decoder and methods for implementing such devices are disclosed herein. The source channel encoder includes a linear transform encoder configured to generate a plurality of source components. A successive refinement quantizer is configured to generate a plurality of bit planes based on the source components. A systematic linear encoder configured to map the bit planes into channel-encoded symbols. The linear transform encoder may be configured to apply a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) or a Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The linear transform encoder may be configured for differential encoding.
