A cathode for a multilayer solid-state electrochemical cell is described herein. The cathode comprises nanofibers of a cathode active material; particles of the cathode active material; and nanofibers of a cubic phase lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (c-LLZO); all of which are dispersed in a polymeric matrix. Electrochemical cells comprising a solid-state electrolyte and the cathodes comprising the nanofibers of c-LLZO are also described herein.

Nanofiber polymer composite cathodes

A solid-state electrolyte for a multilayer solid-state electrochemical cell is described herein. The electrolyte comprises a lithium electrolyte salt and nanofibers of a cubic phase lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (c-LLZO), and a polymer interspersed with the nanofibers and electrolyte salt. Electrochemical cells comprising the solid-state electrolyte, and solid-state cathodes comprising the nanofibers of c-LLZO are also described herein.

Solid-state nanofiber polymer multilayer composite electrolytes and cells

A process for preparing doped-lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (doped-LLZO) is described herein. The method involves dry doping of a co-precipitated lanthanum zirconium oxide (LZO) precursor. Dry doping is a process in which a dry powdered dopant is ground and mixed with a pre-prepared co-precipitated LZO precursor and a lithium salt to provide a LLZO precursor composition, which is subsequently calcined to form a doped-LLZO. The process described herein comprises calcining a dry, powdered (e.g., micron, sub-micron or nano-powdered) mixture of a co-precipitated LZO precursor, a dopant salt or oxide, and a lithium salt under an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature in the range of about 500 to about 1100&#xb0; C., and recovering the doped-LLZO after calcining.

Process for preparing doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide

A method for producing water resistant cathodes is discussed. The method uses mixing cathode powder with solid carbon dioxide to create a mixture and heating the mixture to a temperature. The heating occurs for a time sufficient to cause lithium carbonate coatings to form on the powder. A method for coating lithium-containing cathode surfaces is also discussed. This method uses simultaneously sublimating solid COand condensing atmospheric water vapor onto surfaces. Afterwards allowing the lithium to react with the sublimated COfor a time sufficient to create a lithium carbonate film on the surface.

Carbon dioxide treatment of cathodes
