An exhaust system for treating an exhaust gas composition having NOin a first NOconcentration. The exhaust system includes a first catalyst that contacts a first portion of the exhaust gas composition converting it into a first oxidized exhaust mixture that includes NOin a second NOconcentration that is greater than the first NOconcentration. The system further includes a bypass that receives a second portion of the exhaust gas composition and a recombination section positioned downstream of the first catalyst. The first oxidized exhaust mixture is combined with the second portion of the exhaust gas composition to produce a first combined exhaust gas mixture. A second catalyst converts the first combined exhaust gas mixture to a second combined exhaust gas mixture having a third NOconcentration that is less than the second NOconcentration. The method used by the exhaust system is also provided.

A device is described which provides thermally durable NOgeneration in conjunction with efficient heat-up performance for filter regeneration, and low temperature HC (hydrocarbon) and CO activity. Importantly, it provides both functions while minimizing PGM (platinum group metals) utilization and its associated impact on catalyst cost.

A method of reducing NOx in a vehicle exhaust operating by alternating exhaust flow between two lean NOx traps and directing the emerging exhaust to a downstream SCR catalyst system. While exhaust predominantly flows through one of the lean NOx traps, a reductant is provided to the other NOx trap so as to produce ammonia that is also directed to the SCR catalyst system. An exhaust system implementing the method of the invention is also provided.

Process for reducing NOx emissions from engine exhaust using LNT and SCR components

In an exhaust aftertreatment system, two LNTs having differing compositions are configured in series downstream from an inline fuel reformer. The downstream LNT is adapted for desulfation at higher temperatures than the upstream LNT. During desulfation, the system develops temperature gradients with the temperatures increasing in the direction of exhaust flow. The ordering of the LNTs is designed utilize these gradients. In a preferred embodiment, the system also includes two SCR catalysts having different compositions. The SCR catalyst with a composition adapted to tolerate higher temperatures is located nearer the downstream end of the system.

An exhaust treatment device for treating an exhaust gas stream combines the functionalities of a catalytic particulate filter and a NOx absorber catalyst into a single integral device and is disposed in an exhaust conduit. By combining the functionalities of the catalytic particulate filter and a NOabsorber catalyst into a single integral device, the exhaust treatment device eliminates the temperature losses inherent to the heat capacity of one catalytic device placed in front of the other.

A process for controlling an exhaust system can comprise flowing exhaust gas from the engine past a first oxygen sensor, through a NOadsorber, past a second oxygen sensor, through a catalyst and past a third oxygen sensor, wherein the first oxygen sensor, the second oxygen sensor, and the third oxygen sensor, are in operable communication with an electronic control module, and using a switching delay between the first oxygen sensor and the second oxygen sensor to determine a NOvalue, wherein the NOvalue is selected from the group consisting of a NOregeneration time, a stored NOamount, a NOstorage efficiency, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing NOvalues. A desulfurization process can be initiated when the NOvalue is less than or equal to a first selected value. During the desulfurization process, when the third oxygen sensor signals a condition rich of stoichiometry, oxygen can be provided to the catalyst.

A diagnostic system for monitoring catalyst performance in an exhaust system comprises a plurality of treatment devices catalytically treating an exhaust gas stream, and a plurality of gas sensors for monitoring the catalyst performance of the treatment devices to determine when sulfur poisoning occurs. An on-board diagnostic system receives signals from the gas sensors, and, based upon response time differentials between sensors, determines whether the treatment devices are experiencing sulfur poisoning.
